Rios likes Maidana vs. Mayweather fight

maidanaBy Dan Ambrose: Recent Manny Pacquiao victim Brandon Rios says he likes the idea of a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana on May 3rd. Rios thinks the hard-hitting Maidana would make it interesting against Mayweather because of his power, and Mayweather’s habit of standing in front of his opponents nowadays the same way that Adrien Broner did in his loss to Maidana on December 14th this month.

Rios has seen a lot of Maidana, because he trains in the same gym with him and shares the same trainer in Robert Garcia. Rios has sparred with Maidana in the past, and he knows about his power all too well.

“That would be a good fight,” Rios said to esnewsreporting in taking about a potential Maidana vs. Mayweather fight on May 3rd. “Maidana’s got balls. He comes to fight. That would be another big fight for Mayweather. Maidana comes like a motherf*****. Mayweather does stand in the pocket too like [Adrien] Broner tried to. Mayweather doesn’t run. He stays in there. He slips shots and does a good job of it.”

It would be a good fight between Mayweather and Maidana, because we saw what Maidana was able to do against Broner, who uses the same Mayweather style of fighting. The question would be whether Maidana could do the same thing with Mayweather that he did against little Mayweather [Broner]. I don’t think Maidana would have nearly as much luck against the faster and much smarter and better skilled Mayweather, but who knows? We can’t know until the two of them step inside the ring and fight.

I didn’t think Maidana was going to be able to handle Broner, and he surprised me with the beating he gave him in that fight. If Mayweather chooses to stand in front of him the same way he did against the red-haired Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, I think it could be a really difficult night for Mayweather. Maidana’s a better slugger than Canelo, and much more dangerous in close. Canelo tries to box his opponents with the Mayweather style. But Maidana looks to take his opponents’ heads off with each shot he throws. He doesn’t mess around like Canelo does.
