Pacquiao hoping to meet with Mayweather in U.S to discuss fight

pac773By Chris Williams: If your promoter can’t get you the fight you want then I guess it doesn’t hurt for Manny Pacquiao to make the effort himself to land his big dream fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2014. Pacquiao is apparently going to be flying to the U.S. for a visit and while there he wants to meet with boxing’s biggest start Mayweather to discuss a fight between them. It’s unknown if Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum or his adviser Michael Koncz suggested that he make this move, but it’s worth a try.

We recently heard Arum say he’s waiting for Mayweather’s people to call him instead of him calling them. If that’s the situation Pacquiao has to deal with then he might as well be the guy that does the heavy lifting to try and make the fight happen.

Pacquiao said to Spin.ph “We have to talk first. If we can come to an agreement, then we’ll talk about the fight. We still don’t know, but there’s a chance.”

Pacquiao has nothing to lose at this point by being the one that makes the first move in trying to set up a Mayweather fight. It’s doubtful that his promoter Arum would be able to set the fight up himself even if he did take the initiative to call Mayweather or his representatives to line up the fight. Arum hasn’t had much luck in the past 4 years in making the fight, so Pacquiao probably is better of doing the hard work himself. At least if he tries, he’ll know what’s happening first hand with the talks. Ideally, that’s the way it should be with Pacquiao. He’s a congressman so he should be involved in every phone call and every meeting to try and line up the fight with Mayweather. It’s too important for him to just blindly put it off to others and assume that the right things are being said in the negotiations.

Pacquiao should be the guy that makes the phone calls himself from here on out if he wants to maximize the amount of money he can make for the remainder of his career. He should be calling Golden Boy to try and set himself up with some of their fighters instead of being satisfied with the guys that Arum is offering him in his Top Rank stable. That’s so limiting. Pacquiao needs to take over the reins of setting up his fights. It’s a waste for him to spend the rest of his career fighting a small amount of people in one stable.
