By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. believes that his “little brother” Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) will be able to successfully come back from his 12 round unanimous decision loss to Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) from last Saturday night and still continue to have a successful boxing career.
Although Broner lose his WBA welterweight title in his defeat to Maidana, Mayweather still sees Broner as a champion in his mind.
Mayweather said to Hip Hollywood “Adrien Broner is a true champion. I love Adrien. I take my hat off to him. It’s crazy. When you’re at the top people want to be at your side. But as soon as you take a loss, people want to talk bad about you. It goes with the territory. In competition someone has to win and someone has to lose. Hold your head up.”
I’m not sure if it’s going to make Broner feel much better with Mayweather talking about how someone has to win and someone has to lose. That’s not really giving Broner a hopeful message other than telling him that he wasn’t good enough to be a winner in his competition against Maidana.
Mayweather also said this on twitter to Broner “A true champion can take a loss and bounce back, my little brother.”
Broner is setting himself up to where he won’t bounce back from this loss, because he’s already started a campaign to get a rematch against Maidana. No doubt Mayweather can give Broner a big hand in getting him a rematch with him simply by showing no interest in fighting Maidana next.
A fight against Mayweather is one of the few possible options that Maidana has for his next fight that would lead him to bypass the rematch with Broner. The only other reasons why Maidana would turn down a rematch with Broner is if he could get a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Miguel Cotto or Manny Pacquiao. Any one of those those fights would be good paydays for Maidana, and I could see him saying yes to any of those guys if he could get them to agree to a fight.
Broner would be better off not fighting Maidana again because he doesn’t have the punching power or the defensive skills to beat him. Broner’s about the same weight as Maidana, but he doesn’t have his same power and he doesn’t have a good work rate. If Broner and Maidana fight again the outcome will be pretty much the same as last Saturday’s fight with Broner taking a beating and tasting the canvas two or three times.
