Mayweather says “next week’ about revealing his May 3rd opponent

floyd65By Eric Thomas: We could learn who Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight is by next week, according to Mayweather. He’s fighting on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and he needs to name as soon as possible to start drumming up interest in the fight. It’s not like it was last time where Mayweather had a hugely popular opponent in Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to fight.

This time it’s going to be a lesser star that he faces, and Mayweather is going to be the one that has to do most of the heavy lifting in terms of attracting interest in the fight unless he faces someone like WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin or Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather said to Mlive.com “Next week. I’m looking forward to next week.”

Mayweather’s options for his next fight are as follows: Amir Khan, Devon Alexander, Adrien Broner, Marcos Maidana, Golovkin, Austin Trout, Danny Garcia, Erislandy Lara, and Lucas Matthysse. Broner is probably the best option for Mayweather, but he’s also the least likely to get the fight due to them being friends. Khan has been mentioned a lot as the most likely guy to get the fight, but the response from fans to a Mayweather-Khan fight has been underwhelming.

If Mayweather chooses to fight Khan, he could end up with another fight that brings in similar pay-per-view numbers as his fight against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero from May of this year. It wasn’t a fight that drew a huge number of PPV buys, and that was one of the reasons why Mayweather took the risky fight against Canelo in his next fight.

Mayweather has 4 fights left on his Showtime/CBS contract, and they’ve not been shy to let him know that they would like him to fight Manny Pacquiao. But when asked about a fight against Pacquiao in the same interview, Mayweather said “Who?” That’s not a good sign that we’ll be seeing him face Pacquiao anytime soon. But we could see it in the latter part of 2014 in September, especially if his May 3rd fight brings in low PPV numbers. He’ll need someone like Pacquiao to help bring his numbers back to where they were for the Canelo fight.
