By Eric Thomas: Now that Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) has defeated Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision to capture his WBA welterweight title by beating hm by a 12 round unanimous decision last night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, Maidana now is very interested in facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) on May 3rd.
Maidana wants the big money fight that many boxing fans feel will go to Amir Khan. Maidana certainly proved that he deserves a fight against Mayweather Jr. last night by beating his slower, younger, smaller and less talented clone in Broner by the scores 117-109, 115-109, 115-110.
“I am ready to fight Floyd Mayweather,” Maidana said to esnewsreporting. “I have the power to beat anyone in the welterweight division.”
What better way for Mayweather to avenge the loss of his clone and pupil Broner then to take on and beat the guy that just dominated him in Maidana. That would seem like the ideal fight, as it would like the ‘revenge of the brother’ type of rematch, although Mayweather isn’t related to Broner. It would still give Mayweather the opportunity to avenge the loss of his good friend. Broner has patterned his fighting style and even speaking mannerisms after Mayweather. This would be an excellent way for Mayweather to show Broner how it’s done in how to go about beating a stronger fighter like Maidana.
Maidana is a better option for Mayweather than Khan because he’ll bring a lot more power, and make it interesting for as long as it lasts. To be sure, Khan would make it exciting as well, but his weak chin would probably betray him at some point and we’d see Mayweather hurting him with a hard shot and knocking him out.
Amir Khan defeated Maidana three years ago by a close 12 round decision by the scores 114-111, 114-111, 113-112. However, there was some controversy about how the fight was controlled by referee Joe Cortez because inserted himself into the fight in the last three rounds after Maidana had Khan badly hurt by constantly pulling Maidana off of a badly hurt Khan while he was attempting to finish him off with power shots. Cortez continually separated Maidana from Khan and would restart them in the center of the ring when Maidana was trying to finish Khan off in close. Maidana had a hard time working on the inside in the last three rounds when he would trap Khan against the ropes. Maidana should have been allowed to work inside because he was still throwing punches, but Cortez separated him again and again. Maidana would have had an excellent chance of knocking Khan out had there been a referee working the fight who let him rather pulling him off of Khan.
