They’ve heard the rumors about Mayweather being interested in the Maidana fight, but as of now there’s been zero contact made towards a clash between the two fighters. With Mayweather’s May 3rd date only 5 months away, he’s going to need to make a deal with one of the candidates and make an announcement as soon as January if he wants to be able to have enough time to market the fight in any real way.

Maidana and Amir Khan are opponents that won’t sell as easily as Mayweather’s last fight against the red-haired Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. For this season it’s in Mayweather’s best interest to make a deal and announce his fight sooner rather than later.

Here’s an official statement made from Team Maidana on their facebook page:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM TEAM MAIDANA: As some rumors have arisen in the last few hours about a potential unification fight between WBC Welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA Welterweight champion Marcos Maidana next May 3rd, Team Maidana wants to clarify that we have not been contacted about it as of yet, except for that creative art piece posted by Mayweather Jr. himself around the web which Chino Maidana (a.k.a. “the biscuit” in this case) already answered.

Chino Maidana is on a well deserved vacation on his native town of Margarita and will not be begging around for that fight. And unlike others Chino will not put down other fellow boxers who apparently are in the race to face the best of the world. We think the boxing people already made clear what kind of fight they want to watch May 3rd, 2014: a fight between two champions.”

You have to wonder whether the part where Team Maidana mentions begging for the fight and putting down fellow boxers as a shot against Amir Khan, because he’s been campaigning awfully hard for the Mayweather fight, and he took a shot at Maidana in an interview with the Dailymail yesterday.
