Maidana: Broner hasn’t been tested by a natural welterweight like me

maidana543By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) likes his chances against WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) in their fight on December 14th. Maidana sees Broner as being an untested fighter against a real welterweight like himself. Broner has one win at welterweight against Paulie Malignaggi, but that was against a small welterweight who started his career as a light welterweight.

Maidana feels that him being a legitimate welterweight is going to be too much for the pumped up super featherweight Broner in this fight when they meet up at the Alamodome on Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas.

Maidana said “He has not been tested by a natural welter like me. That’s why this is the hardest fight of his life. I don’t think Broner is such a slick boxer. He’s talented, but I’m preparing well.I’ll make sure he respects me in the ring.”

Broner has punch as well, but he’s not one of those fighters that is capable of throwing with major power on every shot. He’s need to land just right in order to hurt his opponents. Maidana the opposite. He can hurt you with every shot he throws. It’s just that his hand speed is slow, so his opponents can see his shots coming and brace for them. But with his power being excellent, he’ll wear you down over time with his big shots.

Maidana can also stop you with body shots at any time. That might be the direction he’ll look to go in on Saturday if Broner chooses to lean backwards while using the Mayweather shoulder roll defense. Hitting Broner with head shots might not be easy for Maidana, but he’ll be able to connect with body shots all night long if Broner stays in one play like he normally does. Maidana is okay with him standing still and leaning back, because it’ll open up opportunities to test Broner’s body with hooks.

It might be time for Broner to finally lose for the first time on Saturday night. If Maidana doesn’t do it, someone else will. Broner isn’t the same fighter at this weight than he was at super featherweight and at the lightweight. The whole world knows that, because he barely beat Malignaggi. That was a fight where Broner was pretty badly exposed, and he’s very lucky he didn’t get beat because it was that close.
