Maidana and Khan are the same for Floyd Jr., says Mayweather Sr.

Floyd Sr. sees both Khan and Maidana as flawed fighters that will end up getting clowned by Mayweather Jr. and likely knocked out.

Floyd Sr. seems to prefer that Khan be Mayweather Jr’s next opponent and then Maidana coming after him, but as far as the fight itself, he sees neither of them as being good enough to make an interesting fight.

“It’s [Mayweather-Maidana] an easy fight, I’m telling you. It’s not difference from fighting Khan,” Floyd Sr. said to On the Ropes Boxing Radio. “He’s [Maidana] easy to hit. Broner hit him easy. Maidana looks like a tough guy, but too much hand speed [for Floyd Jr.], too much trickery, and too much mind power. Those two are tailor-made for him. If you bring one, it’s just like bringing the other to me, because we’re not expecting them to be hitting anyone.”

Maidana is the bigger name right now by virtue of his recent win over Broner from last Saturday. Khan hasn’t fought since April of this year in barely beating Julio Diaz, and he hasn’t taken a serious fight since he was knocked out in the 4th round by WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last year in July. Khan has been in the rebuilding mode for his last two fights, and even then he almost got beaten by the 33-year-old Julio Diaz.

Maidana’s big win over Broner puts him in the spotlight with boxing fans, and he’s clearly a bigger name for Mayweather Jr. to be fighting right now than the struggling Khan, who appears to be one loss away from being finished as a fighter.

Mayweather might want to make sure he fights Khan before he is officially put out of his misery, because if he doesn’t do it then someone else will. But by the same token, if Mayweather is interested in making as much money as he can from his next fight, then Maidana is probably the smarter choice because he’ll likely bring in a lot of the Mexican fans to purchase the fight on pay-per-view, even though he’s from Argentina. Khan isn’t going to be able to bring in Mexican fans, but Maidana has a good chance of doing that.

Khan would be interesting fight for Mayweather in the 2nd half of 2014 if he’s willing to fight Khan in a huge stadium in the UK. That would make it financially worthwhile, but it wouldn’t be a great fight in the U.S because Khan never redeemed himself by avenging his losses to Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson.
