By Jim Dower: Commonwealth light heavyweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli (38-6, 30 KO’s) successfully defended his title on Saturday night with a 7th round TKO win over challenger Courtney Fry (18-4, 6 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Maccarinelli, 33, hurt Fry with a storm of hard power shots to the head in the 7th causing referee Richard James Davies to halt the fight.

Maccarinelli knocked Fry down in the 1st and 6th rounds with big shots to the head. Fry was in bad shape for the 7th in taking one-way traffic from Maccarinelli when the referee stepped in and halted the fight.

For Maccarinelli, this is his third straight victory after losing by a controversial 2nd round stoppage at the hands of Ovill McKenzie last year in November. However, Maccarinelli still would have hard time fitting in against the world class light heavyweights like Adonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev. There’s a big difference in beating the likes of Fry and than beating the top guys at 175.

WBO European lightweight champion Stephen Ormond (16-1, 7 KO’s) defeated Derry Mathews (34-9-2, 19 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision. Ormond took the fight to Mathews, constantly backing him up and landing shots. Ormond didn’t have a lot of power, but his high work rate was enough for him to outwork Mathews and earn the victory.
