Khan: I want to be the one to beat Mayweather

khan65By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) is still hanging around in limbo, having sacrificed the last eight months of 2013 waiting to hear the word of whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) will agree to fight him or not in early 2014. Mayweather Jr. still hasn’t said a word about whether he’ll choose Khan as his next opponent, but that hasn’t stopped Khan from talking about the Mayweather fight 24/7.

Khan said via Fightnews “He is undefeated and I want to be the one to defeat him. I have been training very hard for the past 8-10 weeks. My next fight will be in May 2014, and I hope it’s against Mayweather.”

This sounds so sad. It reminds me of a kid talking about a Christmas present he badly wants, but then he gets up and instead of the thing he wants, he gets a few pair of socks and some color books. I can’t remember seeing a fighter pine away for a fight as much as Khan is with the Mayweather bout. Khan has been talking about that fight for what seems like eons, and Mayweather hasn’t given him any hints at all that he wants to fight him; yet Khan is virtually standing still with his career waiting and hoping for what may never happen. It would be tragic if Khan doesn’t get the fight with Mayweather, but there would be a lesson learned from this in there for Khan. You don’t just standstill waiting for something.

It’s too bad that Khan talking about the Mayweather fight might not make it happen in reality. If it was that easy everyone would be fighting Mayweather, but that’s just not reality. I hate to say it but Khan might have nothing to show for his wasted time if Mayweather chooses to fight someone else on May 3rd instead of him.

The interest doesn’t seem to be there from boxing fans about a Mayweather-Khan fight, and I think Mayweather knows that, which is why he’s probably not talking up the Khan fight and giving him hope. Mayweather likes to fight guys that are well respected in the boxing community and winning their fights. You can’t really say that with Khan unfortunately. I mean, he’s lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, and that’s not good, is it? That’s not quite Mayweather material as far as his past opponents go. The only way I could see Mayweather making an exception to fight Khan is if he was a super star like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but that’s not the case with Khan. He has a following in the UK, but he’s hardly popular like Canelo with his Mexican fans in Mexico.
