Khan gives his reasons why Mayweather should fight him

khan52By Scott Gilfoid: In a sign of what appears to be growing desperation from Amir Khan in his attempts to get a Floyd Mayweather Jr. mega-fight, Khan came up with a list of reasons why Mayweather needs to fight him on May 3rd instead of someone else. Among the reasons why Mayweather should fight him instead of another opponent, Khan mentioned that he has almost as many twitter followers as Floyd, and that he’s well known in India, Pakistan, Dubai and England.

I hate to be the one to break this to Khan but the fight, if Khan gets picked out by Floyd, will be staged in the United States and not the places that he mentioned where he’s popular. This means that the fans in the other areas of the world won’t be able to pump up the U.S PPV totals unless they fly over to the U.S and order the fight on Showtime PPV. Somehow, I don’t see that happening, which is why Khan’s argument is totally irrelevant.

“If Floyd wants to be a superstar in the world of boxing he has to fight superstars of the world,” Khan said via RingTV. I have the second most active followers on Twitter after Floyd Mayweather. I have 1.5 million. Floyd has 2.2 million. I’m a big name in Dubai, probably a bigger name than Floyd. I’m a huge name in England. I’m a bigger name than Floyd in Pakistan and India. If Floyd wants to be a global star he has to fight people like me.”

I think it’s safe to say that Mayweather is already a global star without Khan, and by fighting him he’s not going to be anymore or any less of a global star. To be honest, I see this as more of a stay busy fight for Mayweather than a competitive match-up that will win him fans globally. It’s a mismatch wherever the fight is shown at.

I’m starting to think Khan is a bit worried whether he’s going to get the fight with Mayweather. Khan needs to relax. If he doesn’t get the fight, he can always take on the winner of the Devon Alexander vs. Shawn Porter fight. Or better yet, face Breidis Prescott and try and avenge his 1st round knockout loss to him. Khan should have done that one ages ago.
