Groves could sign with U.S promoter

groves95By Scott Gilfoid: British super middleweight contender George Groves (19-1, 15 KO’s) reportedly is shopping for a new promoter after his promotional contract expired with his previous promoter following Groves’ controversial loss to IBF/WBA 168 lb. champion Carl Froch last November.

The interesting thing is that the big U.S powerhouse promoters – Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank and Dibella Entertainment, in addition to K2 – are all reportedly interested in signing the 24-year-old Groves. If Groves signs with one of the big U.S promoters, it would be interesting to see how they go about trying to make him a star in the states.

Groves is young enough to be slowly marketed and built into a star in America, and it doesn’t even matter if he fails to get a rematch with Froch. With an American promoter, Groves can be put in the right fights to where he’ll eventually get a world title sooner or later.

“There’s an awful lot of promoters interested in me,” Groves said to the Daily Mail. “I’m doing my job right and they’re interested. Plenty from Stateside – four from Stateside, all the big players are interested. I’m in a good position, I’m happy.”

Groves had some valuable sparring with Andre Dirrell not long ago and the sparring seems to have changed Groves’ fighting style in improving him from just a straight slugger to more of a finesse type of fighter. I can just imagine how good Groves would be if he could spar more with Dirrell, and live in the U.S., so that he could have access to an excellent trainer and good opposition to spar with. Being in the UK, Groves’ situation is a lot more limited because he doesn’t have as many good fighters to spar with like he would if he moved over to the States.

If Groves signed with someone like Golden Boy, he might have an outside chance of fighting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez one of these days. Canelo still fights at junior middleweight, but he comes into his fights over 170+ after rehydrating. That’s light heavyweight. Groves vs. Canelo would be an excellent fight. If Groves signs with K2, then he could end up fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
