By Allen Hmiel: Boxing is a great sport and the sport where an upset can occur in any fight off of one big perfectly landed punch. Every fighter entering a boxing ring has a chance to win. One perfectly thrown hard shot right on the button KO’s any opponent at any given moment. Thinking back through the years what is the biggest boxing upset by a KO ever?
I have seen on TV the phantom punch of Muhammad Ali on Sonny Listen in the 1st round in their fight. Buster Douglas KO of Mike Tyson has been ranked as the best by some boxing Pundits. Sergio Martinez KO’s Paul Williams with a devastating left haymaker is epic. Rahman’s KO’s of the champion Lennox Lewis is still one of the best and most shocking KO’s of a champion ever. Juan Marquez will forever be remembered for his KO of Manny Pacquiao ruining Manny’s legacy forever. Tommy Hearns KOing Pipino Cuevas and Roberto Duran is the stuff of legends. George Foreman destroying the champion Joe Frazier will always be remembered as shocking. Stevenson ‘s KO of Sad Chad Dawson opened up eyes and made a career for Stevenson.Kovalev destroying the inept under skilled weak Nathan Cleverly? Manny Paq stretching Ricky Hatton mid ring in a stunning KO will forever be remembered by British fans and true boxing fanatics. How about Rocky Marciano putting Jersey Joe Walcott to sleep? Joe Louis destroying Max Schmelling in the 1st round? Jack Dempsey beating the larger Jess Willard into a bloody mess. Marvin Hagler’s Knock Out of the rubber legged Tommy Hearns in the 3rd round is huge.
So may great KO’s in boxing keeps fans anticipating when the next Knockout will happen. Determining which one is the best in boxing history is tough. What was the best KO and the most shocking is difficult. My grandfather always said Joe Louis winning by KO over Schmeling gave all America hope. Personally seeing Mike Tyson getting Knocked out by the average Buster Douglas is my best KO ever. Manny sleeping face first sniffing canvas is second.
