David Price gives up his domestic level straps

price47By Scott Gilfoid: In a move that was long overdue, British heavyweight David Price (15-2, 13 KO’s) is vacating his British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles in order to focus on fighting world level competition rather than being dragged down having to defend those titles over and over again against lesser opposition. Price has a new promoter in Sauerland Events, and they’re taking over with the rebuilding of his career. His German handlers will try and make all the right moves to steer him towards a heavyweight world title the fight way.

The 6’8″ Price has been stopped a couple of times by Tony Thompson this year, so it’s imperative that he focus on fighting the right guys to get his career back on track.

Thompson obviously isn’t a domestic level fighter, which is why Price was destroyed so easily by him. That’s the whole problem with holding down domestic level straps. It puts a fighter in a place where they’re facing lesser heavyweights and they get used to easy wins the way that Price was.

When Price finally did fight someone with a decent amount of talent in the 6’5″ Tony Thompson, Price wasn’t ready at all and he got knocked out in the 2nd and 5th rounds respectively.

Price said this about his decision to give up his British and Commonwealth titles:

“Now the time is right for me to move in a different direction in order to rebuild my career and achieve my ultimate goal of becoming heavyweight world champion. As for the fight with Derek (Chisora), this is something that really interests me and I’d hope it has the potential to be made later next year.”

Price will be fighting this month in 10 days on December 14th against the 6’9″ Russian journeyman Evgeny Orlov (14-12-1, 10 KO’s) at the Jahnsportforum, Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

Price needs to be taught how to fight from the ground up. He needs a trainer that can teach him how to use his jab, clinch and avoid getting hit. What Price needs is a trainer that can do the same things that the late Emanuel Steward did for Wladimir Klitschko in turning his career around after he’d been stopped by Ross Puritty, Corrie Sanders and Lamon Brewster.
