Chisora in the mix for an eliminator to get WBC title shot

chisora545By Scott Gilfoid: EBU heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (19-4, 13 KO’s) could find himself in position to get a title shot in 2015 of 2016 if he chooses to take part in a WBC heavyweight eliminator bout to try and get a title shot at the winner of the February 15th fight between Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola. Those two are fighting for the vacant WBC heavyweight title.

The WBC plans on having two separate eliminator bouts to line up a couple of mandatory challengers. Chisora, #6 WBC, could find himself facing someone like #5 WBC Mike Perez, if Chisora agrees to take part in the eliminator. If not, then I guess he’ll be waiting a long, long time for a title shot against the WBC champion because I honestly don’t think the Arreola-Stiverne winner will just give Chisora a title shot without him having worked himself into a mandatory position.

“I think he [Chisora] is [world champion material], said Jim Watt of Sky Sports. “His reputation was raised after the performance he put in against Klitschko and I think he is much more business-like in what he does…Dereck is another one who could very well be in the mix.”

Well, Chisora’s reputation soared against the injured Vitali, who beat Chisora with just his right hand after tearing up his left shoulder in the 2nd round. But Chisora’s reputation soured immediately with his 5th round knockout loss to David Haye last year in July. And Chisora hasn’t exactly shined in his last three fights in beating Malik Scott in the infamous 9 count stoppage win last July, and his victories over Edmund Gerber and Ondrej Pala. The last win over Pala was especially bad because that was the rabbit punch victory for Chisora where he nailed poor Pala in the back of the head with a couple of beautiful textbook rabbit shots after he got out of position. Pala staggered Chisora several times in the fight, and that’s kind of troubling given that Pala is a 2nd tier fighter.

I’d like to think that Chisora will take part in a WBC eliminator bout against the likes of Mike Perez or Deontay Wilder, but I have my doubts he’ll agree to take part in that dangerous process. I see Chisora taking the easy way out and just waiting and hoping that a title shot will fall into his lap. I think he’ll long time for that fight.

Chisora will be back in action on February 15th in defending his EBU title at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK against an opponent still to be determined. I hope it’s at least someone better than Pala or Gerber.
