By Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) isn’t too worried about his opponent Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) being a big puncher for their fight in less than two weeks on December 14th at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Broner doesn’t care that Maidana has shown good power in his past fights. Broner doubts that Maidana will be in the position to land his big punches because he intends on making him miss all night.
Broner said today in his conference call with Maidana “I can’t really trash talk with someone who doesn’t speak English. All I can say is that I hope he is at 100%. I never get the credit I deserve. And when I win this fight Dec 14, which I will, I don’t want any excuses. The guys Maidana has fought, he’s been able to hit; he’s got to hit me first.”
Broner does have top rate defensive skills on the level of a Floyd Mayweather Jr. type of fighter. Broner does a great job of picking off shots with his gloves, and leaning backwards to avoid head shots. Broner’s body is there to be hit, but he’s good at picking off his opponents with straight shots when his opponents go to his body. Broner makes them pay each time they try and land body punches. He’s also capable of moving away when he’s getting hit too much, and that’s something that a lot of boxing fans are forgetting about him. Broner can move when he wants to, and make his opponents looks bad.
Maidana has struggled recently in his fights against Josesito Lopez, Jesus Soto-Karass and Devon Alexander. Maidana was nearly helpless against Alexander with his fast hands, quick combinations and his tendency to tie Maidana up with shots after he’d last hos shots. Maidana couldn’t get past Alexander’s speed and ended up taking a beating in his 10 round decision loss last year in February.
