Broner: I want a rematch; I don’t need warm-up

broner73737By Allan Fox: Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) says he wants an immediate rematch against Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) and he doesn’t want a tune-up/warm up fight to get him ready before facing him again. Broner wants the fight straight away to try and avenge his 12 round unanimous decision loss from last night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Broner was knocked down twice by big Maidana left hooks, and wobbled on least two other occasions in the fight. However, Broner doesn’t have a rematch clause in the contract with Maidana, so if there’s going to be a rematch it’ll be because Maidana wants it. The only reason he’d want a rematch with Broner is if he can’t get a much bigger fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or someone like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Those would be bigger fights than a rematch with Broner, and Maidana could have a chance at fighting either one of those guys now that he’s got this big win over Broner under his belt.

Broner said via ESPN “I’ll tell you one thing; Make a rematch. I don’t need a warm-up fight. I want a rematch.”

Right now there’s no word on whether Broner suffered a damaged jaw from the fight. The right side of Broner’s face was swollen up after the fight, and he was taken to a hospital via ambulance. If Broner suffered a broken jaw, then an immediate rematch would be out of the question. Broner would need at least 6 months to fully heal from a broken jaw, and there’s no way that Maidana would sit idle waiting for Broner to heal to where he can fight again.

Golden Boy Promotions might not be too eager to have Broner face Maidana again, because they’ve worked so hard all these years in matching Broner against guys that were made for him. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer might not be in a hurry to put Broner back in with Maidana because he’s got to know by watching the fight that Broner would have a good chance of losing the rematch if that fight were to take place.

Broner needs to think about moving back down in weight, as this fight and his previous one against Paulie Malignaggi have shown that he really doesn’t have the tools to be a dominant fighter at 147. He’s not equipped in the same way that his hero Floyd Mayweather Jr. is in competing at this level. Mayweather started his career at super featherweight and he was able to make the move up to welterweight and succeed after many years in the lighter weight classes. But Mayweather had speed, movement and strong defensive skills going for him when he moved up in weight. Broner doesn’t have any of those things going for him, so it’s more difficult for him. He has Mayweather’s shoulder role and his pot-shot style down, but nothing else. Broner is more of a poor man’s version of Mayweather, and that’s why he’s not going to be able to fight at a high level in the welterweight division.
