By Al Hmiel: Years ago becoming an Olympic Boxing Champion meant something to all Americans and the Gold medal was considered a badge of honor coming with prestige and glory and future riches as a professional. fighters who won Olympic Gold in the ring were revered and respected and considered heroes for representing America in the Olympics and winning the medal.
Today the USA Olympic Boxing program is a rudderless leaderless broken program not capable of even fielding a representative boxing team to compete against the world’s best amateur fighters in the Olympics. Who is in charge of the USA Olympic Boxing program? Talk about a transparent unknown entity? Who coaches our Olympic hopefuls and guides this unknown program of no names struggling to make an USA boxing Olympic team no one in America cares about. Is there an Olympic Boxing program currently and where and whom is actually directing these phantoms underachievers called US hopefuls?
The Olympic Boxing teams of the past used to be a star field of boxing talented studded individuals with bright futures and world championships waiting to be theirs. So sad to see the US Olympic boxing program relegated to a minor unpublicized uninteresting array of average talent not capable of winning Olympic Gold. Ever see a good article on promising young upcoming US fighters boxing and training for Olympic gold?
Does any fans actually know of any up and coming US amateur fighters worthy of recognition and future fame? Who is the man in charge of US boxing? If we have to ask then that man is not doing his job. Who is the Olympic coach or is there even a head coach? Where have all the bright young stars of boxing gone? The Olympics used to be a springboard to greatness in professional boxing. Now the Olympics is more a deterrent and a delay for young fighters to start collecting paychecks for Pro bouts. Might as well drop the Olympic boxing programs and just let these kids fight as pro’s. Amazing how a sport like US boxing through inept leadership has relegated Olympic boxing to nothing more than water Polo or synchronized swimming. Wonder why this had to happen? I used to look forward to the Olympics and US boxing Gold medal winners. Sad.
