Tyson Fury vs. Dereck Chisora II possible for February 8th

chisora7445By Scott Gilfoid: Dereck Chisora’s promoter Frank Warren mentioned a possible match-up between Chisora and Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) for next February now that David Haye is injured and won’t be able to make his February 8th fight with Fury. Warren sees a Fury-Chisora II fight as a big fight.

Fury mentioned wanting to fight unbeaten American knockout artist Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) next, but I could definitely see Fury and his promoter Mick Hennessy opting to take the arguably much easier fight by backtracking with his career to face a guy he already dominated two years ago in Chisora. It’s a move I could see Fury making.

Warren said via the Daily Mail “It’d be a brilliant fight. It’s the next best thing after Haye-Fury. Dereck’s resurrected his career – he’s fighting two stone lighter than when he fought Tyson last time out. I think it’d be a great fight for the fans. We could make it the same date…if we could do it it’d be a great fight…Dereck’s certainly improved.”

I just hope that if Fury takes this fight, that he doesn’t start going back over all his past opponents like Kevin Johnson, Martin Rogan, Big John McDermott and Vinny Maddalone to get some victories. Heck, it’s got to be a lot easier fighting these guys again than getting in the ring with the hard hitting Deontay and risking his neck with the huge right hand missiles that Deontay will be aiming at his head all night.

Chisora proved to be too short for Fury in their fight in July 2011. Fury was able to use his long reach to slap the overweight Chisora around the ring for 12 rounds in one of Fury’s easier fights in recent memory.

I can’t see a rematch being any different between Chisora and Fury. Chisora is just too short to reach the target of Fury’s head, and Chisora badly telegraphs his wide punches too much. Fury seemed to know what was coming each time Chisora would throw something, and he was able to block his shots easily. I wouldn’t be interesting in seeing Fury outbox Chisora again. I think Fury needs to move forward with his boxing career rather than backwards.

The problem with Fury facing Chisora is a victory against him won’t likely do much for his rankings because Chisora is a 2nd tier heavyweight and not ranked in the top 15. Beating Chisora would be pretty much the same as Fury’s victories over 2nd tier guys like Rogan, Maddalone and McDermott. Fury would get a lot more out of beating the #3 WBC Deontay Wilder, because this guy is ranked high by the WBC, and he’s unbeaten. If Fury beats Wilder, he gains a ton of respect in the boxing community. If beats Chisora, it’s like ‘so what? You’ve already done it before and Chisora has been beaten four times already so what’s the point?’

Chisora (18-4, 12 KO’s) has a fight scheduled this month on November 30th against a still to be determined opponent at the Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Hackney Wick, London, United Kingdom.
