donaire22By Gerardo Granados: Last Saturday night at Corpus Christi, Texas, U.S.A.; Former champion Nonito Donaire failed to impress against the Armenian Raging Bull Vic Darchinyan, who once again fell short of victory when got over confident and undermined Nonito´s big left.

Entering the ninth round I had it scored 78 – 74 for Vic, Darchinyan kept a tight guard countering Donaire with hard shots thru round one to the eight with Nonito´s face showing clear signs of damage. But, in the ninth round Donaire landed his big left that lead to Darchinyan demise; Vic picked up the count visibly hurt only to take more punishment until the referee stopped the bout.

Not the less even that Donaire won by TKO9, he looked not only slow but also out of timing and too cautious not willing to risk much. Darchinyan was busier than Donaire, who failed to pressure the fight and to take advantage of his height and reach and also to take advantage of his jab. Even his own corner urged him to throw more punches but Nonito seemed to hesitate when he was about to engage. Darchinyan was in control of the fight and heading to get a clear win on the score cards until he leaved an opening that gave Donaire the chance to land a punch that saved him from an almost certain loss.

The fight didn’t live up to the expectations but still was a good one. Darchinyan proved to be a tough lion to beat and after the fight ended Donaire leaved more doubts than answers. As for the betting odds it didn’t reflect the real ring performance of the combatants. As I stated on a previous article I thought that Darchinyan could win, but I never guessed that Donaire would look the way he did. A friend of mine believes the reason was the flu that Donaire had one week previous the fight but for me it is not an illness the reason for his performance, but instead it might be a matter of lost self confidence after his past defeat.

Nonito wants a rematch against Guillermo Rigondeaux next, but it might not be wise for him to do so; even his promoter wants to match him against a more suitable opponent instead of a rematch that wouldn´t represent a good business for the involved. But could it be because the fight leaved more doubts instead of answers?
