Mundine defeats Mosley after back injury for Shane

mundine53By Jim Dower: In a disappointing finish, 42-year-old Shane Mosley (47-9-1, 39 KO’s) was unable to continue fighting after the 6th round due to back spasms in his fight against 38-year-old Anthony Mundine (45-5, 27 KO’s) to win the vacant WBA International light middleweight title at the Allphones Arena, Olympic Park, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The crowd booed when the fight was halted, and it’s hard to blame them.

Mundine says he wants a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., but you have to wonder if that’s the case then why was he fighting 42-year-old Mosley instead of a top welterweight like Keith Thurman? Mundine seems to be going about trying to get a fight against Mayweather all backwards. Instead of fighting guys like Mosley, Mundine needs to step it up by fighting younger welterweights that are ranked high and that can still fight. Tonight’s fight just looked like a match between two aging fighters with one much bigger than the other and a little bit younger. At 38, Mundine really should be fighting better opposition than Mosley if he wants a fight against Mayweather, because you don’t see Mayweather fighting weak opposition like that.

Both fighters looked bad with both lacking speed, power and work rate. Mundine was much bigger than Mosley, but not particularly powerful. It was like watching a drained super middleweight fighting a small welterweight.

Mosley stunned Mundine with a right hand to the head in the 4th that sent him retreating backwards towards the ropes. Mundine then came back and landed a few hard shots that caused Mosley to slip and fall while clinching. It wasn’t impressive stuff.

Mundine landed the better shots in most of the rounds, but he wasn’t throwing a lot of shots. Mundine would land around 3–4 decent shots in the rounds. Much of then time it was clinching and missed punches from Mundine. He looked poor compared to other top junior middleweights in the division. Based on this performance, I wouldn’t give Mundine any chance at all of beating the top fighters at 154 like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Erislandy Lara, Austin Trout and Vanes Martirosyan. Mundine isn’t in their class and he’d get badly outworked and probably knocked out by all of them.

Both Mundine and Mosley should probably retire because neither of them look anywhere close to the top fighters in their respective divisions. Mundine can probably string his career out a little longer by fighting weak opposition in Australia like he’s been doing for the past 5 years pretty much, but he’s not going to beat anyone good at 154 and he already got beaten by Daniel Geale at 160, and he was considered the weakest of the middleweight champions.
