Khan says he’ll fight Mayweather only at 147

khan43By Scott Gilfoid: Former two division world champion Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) says he’ll only agree to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) at 147 lbs., and not at a catch-weight over that weight. Mayweather hasn’t asked Khan for a catch-weight, so it’s hard to understand what Khan is talking about. Heck, Khan still doesn’t have the fight, and he’s already talking himself out of it by drawing a line in the sand.

“I will not be dictated to,” Khan said to the Daily Star. “With me it will be 147 lbs and that is it. I will be moving up a weight and I will not be killing myself to make it. He is always fighting guys who are slow, but I think it is time he moves up a notch and takes on someone quick, exciting and as big as him.”

This is actually kind of funny to see Khan standing up on his hind legs and telling Mayweather how it’s going to be if he fights him, as if Khan’s the one that has the power in the negotiations. It looks like Khan is too used to being the one that dictates the conditions over the less popular fighters he’s built his record on. Things are much different with him trying to negotiate with Mayweather. It’s Mayweather who is the Goliath in these negotiations and Khan just the opponent with no negotiating power.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Mayweather moves on if Khan continues to say what he will or what he won’t do. This isn’t a big enough fight for Mayweather to have to put up with an uppity opponent trying to dictate what weight the fight will take place at. Khan should be happy to get this fight at all, because the fact he’s lost two out of his last four fights, and you can make a strong argument that Khan has really lost 3 out of his last 4 fights because his win over Julio Diaz last April was very controversial. Khan’s career is one knockout loss from being pretty much over, and I see this fight as his cash out fight. If Khan talks too much trash, he could end up missing his cash out fight and getting knocked out by someone like IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander, who Khan was previously going to be fighting on December 7th until he wised up and pulled out of the fight.

Mayweather should move on and look to fight someone else. Let Khan dictate to other fighters in the welterweight division because he doesn’t have the negotiating muscle to pull that move with Mayweather.
