Is Mayweather Jr. afraid of Golovkin?

floyd676By Tim Knight: Floyd Mayweather Sr. was interviewed by Chris Robinson from Hustleboss.com days after the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight and was posed with the question of whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. should fight WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin next? Floyd Sr. responded, “I would advise him not to.” Proving that he fears for Floyd Jr would lose to him.

Floyd Sr. would not approve of Floyd Jr. fighting a man that could beat him. He approves of Amir Khan, and we all know why, the guy has a glass jaw. Mayweather would beat Khan senseless, but Floyd Sr. says, “no” to Gennady, because he knows Floyd Jr. would lose to him. Floyd Sr. is only going to approve of boxers he knows his son can beat, and is going to disapprove of those he knows his son will lose to.

Many will argue it’s a different weight class, that Golovkin fights at 160 pounds, but he’s publicly said he’ll fight at 154 pounds if offered the Mayweather fight. The last Golovkin fight on HBO was viewed by over 1 million viewers and his undefeated record makes him a true contender. People see it as a competitive match, when the alternative Mayweather-Khan fight is seen as a joke. If Mayweather wants to be viewed as an all-time great he should take on the best fighters in the world, not just hand pickings. Manny Pacquiao has won titles in eight divisions, Mayweather only 5 divisions, so he hasn’t yet reached his status level. Pacquiao takes on all challengers, while Mayweather takes on those he knows he can beat. If Mayweather is as great as he says he is, he will take on the best middleweight fighter in the world. I don’t think he will, his dad knows he’ll lose to Gennady and so those Floyd Jr. He’ll probably take the easy fight against Amir Khan on May 3rd.
