Haye wants Wladimir rematch after shoulder injury heals

haye6544By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it didn’t take David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) long to start mentioning Wladimir Klitschko’s name following Haye pulling out of his previously scheduled fight against Tyson Fury due to Haye having shoulder surgery.

Rather than talking about healing up his shoulder to try and face Fury, Haye says he wants to heal up his shoulder and face Wladimir in a rematch. In other words, Haye would be skipping the fight with Fury, which was supposed to be a bout that would partially redeem Haye after his lopsided 12 round unanimous decision loss to Wladimir in July 2011.

Let’s be real here; Haye hasn’t done anything to redeem himself other than beat Dereck Chisora last year, and I hardly see that win as being nearly enough to make boxing fans forget how easily Haye was beaten by the 6’6″ Ukrainian.

Haye said to Sky Sports: “There’s a long way back currently. I’ve got six pins in my shoulder and really don’t have any idea what the story is going to be. As long as my arm can function properly I will want to come back but it’s important…I still don’t think I was at my best in that fight against Wladimir. If I can make it back that is still a fight I would want.”

I really don’t think Wladmir is going to give Haye a gift fight when and if he’s able to rehab his surgically repaired right shoulder. I see Wladimir making Haye work his way to a title shot the same way he’s doing with the talented Deontay Wilder. You don’t see Wladimir just gift-wrapping a title shot for Deontay despite the fact that he’s on his way to setting a world record for consecutive knockouts as a heavyweight with 30 knockouts in 30 fights.

If Wladimir is waiting until Deontay is his mandatory challenger, then you can bet that he’s going to make Haye wait until he’s the mandatory challenger. The thing with Haye, though, is if he has to face a tough opponent like Bermane Stiverne, Chris Arreola or Deontay in an eliminator bout, then I can’t see Haye beating any of them. Even with his hayemaker right hand, Haye would be in for a world of hurt against those guys. But without his right hand, Haye would likely get knocked out by all three of those guys.

I could see Wladimir maybe giving Haye an immediate fight after his shoulder heals if he feels that Haye is at the very end of his career and he wants to beat him before someone else picks him off. Wladimir could be shooting himself in the foot if he makes Haye try and beat one of the talents in the division before he’ll fight him again, because I don’t think a one-armed Haye is going to be able to hang against the top contenders in the division now. At this point I think even someone like Fury could do the one-armed Haye if he doesn’t have his right arm power going for him. Deontay only uses one arm, but he’s much bigger than Haye and his right hand is more powerful than Haye’s power.
