Haye talks injury and Froch-Groves

haye562By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye says he’s hoping to come back from his shoulder injury next year. He’s not sure yet whether he’ll be able to come back from the injury he sustained recently, but he’s going to try. His right hand power punch might not be the same, however, and that’s something that worries him. The 33-year-old Haye had a 5-hour surgery this past week to repair a shoulder problem.

As for the Carl Froch vs. George Groves fight this weekend, Haye thinks that Groves is ready for the fight, but he’s not picking any winners or revealing who he believes will win the fight.

Haye said to Sky Sports “I’m hoping I can recover…It’s just making sure I’ve got movement. They’ve advised me to retire, that my big overhand right – the Hayemaker – is the worst punch I could possibly throw with the injury I’ve got. Fighting at heavyweight, I’m going to need the Hayemaker.”

Good god, man, tough it out. I hate to hear fighters complaining about their aches and pains when other people have it so much worse. I don’t see what the big deal is for Haye. There are plenty of heavyweights with only one knockout punch, so why is Haye bellyaching about not having his right hand? He still has a powerful left hook that he used even more than his right hand to knock guys out. Look at guys like Deontay Wilder. He only uses his right hand to knock guys out, yet he’s knocked out 30 of 30 opponents and is well on his way to breaking the heavyweight record for consecutive knockouts. Haye needs to tough it out and not make a major production out of him not being able to use his right hand. If Deontay can’t use his left hand to knock guys out yet, then why is Haye moaning about not being able to use his right? Heck, I can barely remember any fights where Haye knocked anyone out with that punch. It’s usually his left hand that he KOs guys with.

I think whether Haye continues his career or not comes down to whether he feels he needs to money. I can’t believe for a second that Haye would retire if he wasn’t already a rich man. He’s got the cash in his bank account already and that obviously makes the decision a lot easier for him than it would be if he was broke. It’s hard to fathom that Haye would walk away from a payday of 5 million pounds for a fight with Tyson Fury. I’d take the fight even if had to crawl to get into the ring and throw punches with my left hand from the canvas.

Haye said this about the Groves-Froch fight: “I believe he’s [Groves] ready. If he’s not ready now, he never will be. He’s the mandatory challenger; what more does he need to do?”

I totally agree with Haye on that. Groves is more than ready to face Froch and whip him badly on Saturday night. At 25, George Foreman whipped Joe Frazier, so it’s not an age thing. Groves is in his prime and Froch is definitely on the down side of his career and ready to be picked off by Groves.
