Groves: Froch is scared of me because I hurt him

groves67367By Scott Gilfoid: George Groves expects IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch to avoid a rematch with him because he hurt Froch and gave him a concussive beating last Saturday night. Groves feels that Froch doesn’t want to experience the same punishment a second time in a fight with him, and risk having the referee not stop the fight like he prematurely did in their fight. Groves thinks Froch is shaking in his boots at the thought of having to fight him a second time.

Groves said to Sky Sports “I’m not going to standstill with my career for Carl Froch, for him to lay low and avoid me. Right now, I feel he’s scared of me because I hurt him badly. He’s not happy to fight me and be hurt massively in a concussive manner. He’s scared. But if he doesn’t, he’ll lose a lot of fans.”

Groves might want to think about moving on because it doesn’t look like Froch intends on giving him that rematch he so badly craves. The only way that I see Groves getting a rematch in the next six months is if Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn isn’t able to wrangle a deal against the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Andre Ward, Lucian Bute, Mikkel Kessler or Bernard Hopkins.

I see all of those guys coming ahead of Groves for a couple of reasons. First off, if Froch gets whipped by one of them then it’s not nearly as bad if he gets beaten by the still largely unaccomplished Groves. After all, all of those fighters have won world titles and have been around the block. Groves is a newcomer and he hasn’t proven anything yet. His biggest fights came against James DeGale and Froch.

The other reason why Froch would likely face those guys is that the money might be a little bit better if he fights one of them. I’m not sure that it would, but there’s the potential that Froch could make more money against the bigger named fighters. But what I think it really comes down to is that Froch took a beating against Groves, and was on his way to losing the fight when referee Howard John Foster chose to jump in and halt the fight the first time that Groves was stunned in the fight.

Froch was hurt earlier in the fight and Foster gave him a standing eight count to give him an opportunity to clear his head. With Groves, Foster jumped on him to stop the fight putting him in a headlock in the process. It goes without saying that Groves should have been given a chance to fight on like Froch had been, because Foster certainly could have seen Froch stagger in the 1st round after getting knocked down by a right hand from Groves, and then instead of giving Froch a standing eight count, he could have halted the bout like he did with Groves. It could have gone that way but it didn’t. The fact that Groves got treated differently is reason enough for their to be a rematch.
