GBP makes offer to Cotto for Canelo fight

cotto563By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has reportedly met with Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) and made him a $10 million offer to face former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) for a fight on Showtime pay-per-view next May, according to Fightnews.com. There’s no word about whether the 33-year-old Cotto will accept the fight or not.

Cotto has an option of fighting WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez or his 160 lb. title. Cotto also has a chance of getting picked out by Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a rematch of their fight last year where Cotto gave him a lot of problems. Cotto also has the less appealing possibilities of fighting the winner of the Erislandy Lara vs. Austin Trout or facing IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina for his title.

Easily the best option of all those fights in terms of money would be for Cotto to take on the 23-year-old Canelo, because that’s a bout that would likely bring in good PPV numbers. Canelo has a huge fan base, and there would be a lot of boxing fans interested in seeing the two of them go to war for 12 rounds. Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez is a good fight as well, but Sergio’s star has diminished recently with his less than impressive win over Martin Murray last April. Sergio is starting to suffer a lot of injuries and he’s beginning to show his age. He’s about to turn 39 next February, and the age is really starting to do a number on his body with him suffering injuries one after another.

Mayweather would be smart if he were to pick out Cotto for his next fight on May 3rd, because Mayweather doesn’t have a lot of options for big names at 147 or 154. Now that Mayweather has beaten Canelo, Cotto is the next biggest name for Mayweather to fight at 154. At 147, Mayweather doesn’t have any good options at all to fight other than Manny Pacquiao. The top 147 lb. fighters – Adrien Broner, Devon Alexander, Keith Thurman, Kell Brook, Amir Khan, Tim Bradley, and Marcos Maidana – aren’t popular enough for Mayweather to get huge PPV numbers against them. Broner would be the best of that bunch, but he refuses to fight Mayweather. If Mayweather doesn’t fight Cotto again, then Khan will likely be the guy that he faces in May. That’s not a good fight because Khan never redeemed himself from his losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, and his near loss to Julio Diaz.
