Fury smothering Deontay Wilder with compliments

wilder99By Scott Gilfoid: In a sign that heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) could have some interest in facing unbeaten American contender Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) in the near future, Fury was highly complimentary of Deontay’s skills. In fact, Fury was practically lathering Deontay up with compliments to the point where I wasn’t sure if Fury was on the level or not, but in looking at his face, I think he was. Fury looks like he’s become a fan of the 6’7″ Deontay’s talent.

Fury told IFL TV “I think he’s [Deontay] a great heavyweight. I think he’s going to be a killer. I think he’s a machine from America. 30 knockouts in 30 wins, he’s a beast, a great fighter. It would be great for me to fight him.”

You tell me if that doesn’t sound like Fury is eager to face Deontay. I mean, Fury has done a complete about face from the way he was talking about Deontay before, and it looks like he’s trying to build him up as a future opponent. The fact that Fury is starting this early tells me that he might be maneuvering for a fight against Deontay in 2014. Of course, Fury could also be doing this because he probably sees that Deontay will be fighting for a world title in 2014, so if Fury pours bucketfuls of compliments over the head of Deontay, he could be someone that Deontay thinks about after he picks up one of the heavyweight straps next year.

That’s pretty smart of Fury if that’s what he’s doing. That’s like a politician the way Fury is getting in good with Deontay for a possible fight with him. The thing is Fury hardly needs to do this because Deontay would jump at the chance to fight Fury regardless of how many compliments he feeds him. Deontay wants to be the guy that gives the 6’9″ Fury his first defeat, and he’s chomping at the bit to get a shot at him so that he can be the first to whip him before anyone else does.

It’s just too bad that David Haye will likely be the first to beat Fury before Deontay due to them facing each other on February 8th next year. Once Fury is beaten, I don’t see Deontay wasting his time fight. I wonder also if Fury is being nice to Deontay so that he might give him a fight even after he gets beaten by Haye. By priming the pump with Deontay by saying nice things about him, maybe there’s a chance that Deontay will give him a shot even after Haye knocks Fury out next February.
