Froch: I’m not bothered if I don’t fight Ward again

ward56344By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like you can pretty much forget about ever seeing a fight between Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) and unbeaten Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) again because Froch is saying he doesn’t really care if he doesn’t fight Ward ever again, because he feels content with his own career and he feels he doesn’t need to face Ward ever again, unless he decides he wants to come over to the UK to make the fight happen.

In that case, Froch says he would be interested in a Ward rematch, but that looks to be the only scenario for the fight taking place.

Froch told On the Ropes Boxing Radio “I’m not bothered if I never fight Ward again. I’m in a good place now. The way he fights puts me off. He nicks rounds, he sits in close, and when he’s out of range then he’s out of range to be punched. I don’t think he’d want to fight me in the UK. If he wants to fight me in the UK, then we can talk about it after his fight with [Edwin] Martinez in the UK.”

Somehow I don’t think Ward will get the rematch with Froch even if he agrees to fighting him in the UK, even if he were to say yes to fighting Froch in his hometown of Nottingham.

If Froch does fight Ward again, then I see it being Froch’s last fight of his career in a kind of golden parachute type of situation for Froch with him getting one last payday before he rides off into the sunset. I’m not sure if it would sell on pay-per-view in the UK unless Froch is still winning. It depends on how long he waits before agreeing to fight Ward again.

Froch says he’s very, very interested in fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, but only if Golovkin moves up to the super middleweight division to make the fight happen. Froch says he doesn’t think he could even come down to 166 to give Golovkin a catch-weight to make it easier on him, because Froch feels he can’t lose even two pounds. In other words, it sounds like Froch is calling the shots with both Golovkin or Ward if they want a fight with him.

Froch said about Golovkin: “If he comes up to super middleweight. I’m not going down to middleweight because I cam’t make that weight. The fight will have to be at super middleweight. If he comes up, that’s a fight that can be made.”

I think Golovkin might take the fight, but Froch will need to wait until 2015, because it doesn’t look like Golovkin will be fighting at super middleweight in 2014. Froch will be older at that point and pushing 38 by the time that Golovkin does face him, and I see it going badly for Froch at that point. He’d be much better off agreeing to move down to 160 to fight Golovkin now why he still has a little bit of his youth left, because I don’t see Froch being young enough if he waits until 2015 for the fight to take place.
