Froch: Groves had his chance but he blew it

groves763By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (32-2, 23 KO’s) says he’s not sure whether he’ll give George Groves (19-1, 15 KO’s) a rematch now due to some of things that Groves has been saying in the media since his controversial 9th round TKO loss last Saturday night, according to Boxing News. Froch also says that there’s less of a reason for him to give Groves a rematch because most fans are changing their minds about the fight stoppage being unfair.

They now believe that it was a fair stoppage, Froch says. The only reason why Froch had been contemplating giving Groves a rematch was due to the controversy surrounding the stoppage, but now that fans see it as a fair stoppage, Froch doesn’t see it necessary to give Groves a second chance.

Froch told Boxing News “I don’t think I need to fight George Groves again to prove anything…He’s had his chance and unfortunately he blew it…Groves at the minute is talking himself out of the fight with me because if he keeps carries on the way he’s going he won’t get his rematch.”

I think Groves should forget about wasting his time trying to fight Froch again and just move on. You can see that Froch isn’t eager to fight him again, so it’s probably better for Groves to walk away instead of trying to beat a dead horse by talking up a rematch with him. Groves will get his chance at a world title shot again. He doesn’t need to lower himself by trying to guilt trip Froch into giving him a second shot. Unless Froch is the one that is asking for the rematch, I’d just forget about him and look to fight other guys. Groves needs to try and position himself to win the WBO title because that’s his best bet to capture a world title. He’s not going to beat WBA champion Andre Ward, and it’s a waste of time to try and grovel for a rematch with Froch. It makes Groves look bad in asking Froch for the rematch because it gives him all the power. Groves is better than that.

I believe Groves would have beaten Froch had their fight last Saturday night taken place someplace like the U.S. with a different referee working. Froch would have likely been penalized twice for hitting on the break, and I think he would have been disqualified for hitting Groves twice when the referee was in the process of stopping the fight. Froch’s elbows that he threw would have resulted in points taken off, and there’s a good possibility that Froch would have been disqualified for hitting on the break. The referee would take points off for the second time, but if Froch did it a 4th and a 5th time, I think he’d have been disqualified.

Froch has a win over Groves, but it’s an empty win, a tainted one in the minds of many boxing fans. I’m not hearing a lot of fans saying that the referee made the right decision, so it looks like Froch has been filtering out the storm of negative responses made about the fight and focusing on what is more positive to him.
