froch5645By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) lost his cool at his final press conference today with the younger 25-year-old challenger George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) for their fight on Saturday night at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, UK.

What was interesting about this press conference, besides Froch getting visibly upset with some of the digs that Groves was getting in, was how Groves mic seemed to be turned low so you could barely hear what he was saying, whereas Froch’s was loud making it easy to hear him even when he was whispering. This made it difficult for some of the things that Groves said to be heard, and obviously that helped Froch.

Here’s some of the interesting things that were said:

Groves: “I believe he thinks I’m going to get in there and run from him. Well, Carl, you’re wrong. I’m going to come out and meet you in the center of the ring in the 1st round, and I’m going to win the exchanges. And I’m going to hit you with two right hands; just two. Just to let you know whenever I want to I can hit you with a right hand. In the 2nd round, I’m going to come out and do the same. I’m going to come out to the center of the ring and win the jab exchanges. I’m going to hit you with more right hands. In the 3rd round, I’m going to come out and back you up. I’m going to put him on his back foot. And after the 3rd round, Carl, you’re going to have to see what’s coming.”

Froch: “I’m surprised he’s come up with that game plan in a short period of time.”

Groves: “It’s been 10 weeks, Carl.”

Froch: “So he’s going to come out in the center of the ring and hit me with two right hands?”

Groves: “Try to remember it, Carl.”

Froch: “The first one won’t do any damage. He’s going to hit me with another one. Stupendous. I think my experience, my punching power, and because of Groves’ lack of ability to take a punch, it’s going to be the reason why he’s not going to do what he said he’s going to do. It’s the reason why he’s going to come out to the center of the ring and run for his life, jab and grab and try and get through it. He’s not going to stand and fight. Regardless of what he chooses to do, I’m going to win the fight and beat him on points or by knockout. If he stands and fights, which would be a big, big mistake…I’m really hoping he does come out to the center of the ring and have a fight because it’s exactly what we want.”

Groves: “I am. I’m chinny, but I’ve never been knocked out. But I’m chinny. Carl’s got one-punch knockout power, and yet he doesn’t knock everyone out, does he? He goes to points quite a lot. I’ve seen him go 12 rounds a fair amount of times. He’s said the same things so often; he contradicts himself so often.”

Froch: “On Saturday night you’re going to learn some respect. Listen [Froch now getting angry and starting to lose his cool], you’re getting annihilated on Saturday night. Everybody knows it; I know it and you know it. I can tell by looking in your eyes. I know it looking at you that you know you’re going to get annihilated. That’s it, that’s the end of story.”

Groves: “What exactly about me gives you this confidence? He’s fighting himself psychologically and he’s losing. I’m sitting here asking him questions and he’s falling apart.”

Froch: “When you’ve met with opponents I’ve met with and confronted opponents I’ve been faced with, the level of competition I’ve had over the years. It’s the level of competition that conducts themselves with class and dignity.”

Groves: “You told before your last fight you were going to kill your opponent.”

Froch: “Where did you pull that one out from?”

Groves: “And the [British Boxing] Board had to investigate that.”

Froch: “There’s an old saying ‘You can’t argue with stupid,’ so I’m not going to argue.”

Groves: “Carl, I just asked you a something simple. Are you denying it?”

Froch: “What I’m going to do on Saturday night will be very pleasurable, not only for me but for all of the fans and the viewing public, because this guy is going to get absolutely flattened, I promise you that, and I guarantee you that. He’s going to get whipped, it’s as simple as that. I have nothing to say. I can’t argue with him.”

Groves: “You can’t argue with me because it’s embarrassing. As soon as I ask you something, you call to pieces, Carl.”

Froch: “I fall to pieces. You heard it here yourself. The level of opposition I’ve boxed at, World champions after World champions, fights against class opposition; The only guy on my record I’ve not beaten is Andre Ward, who is pound-for-pound #2. He’ll probably never get beaten through his career, and I fell apart. I try to look at the positives, and I’m scared and confused. It’s all pathetic really, and that’s the good thing about boxing. Saturday night, I get to put it straight, so enjoy it. Take a good look at these belts, because it’s the closest you’re going to get to them. [Froch now working himself up a low boil]. Do you see anything in my eyes? Do you see anything unbelievable about what I’m saying? You’re going to get flattened. Saturday night, you’re going to get a chance to do something about it. You’re getting flattened; knocked out. I can’t wait to smash you. You’re in trouble. Don’t call me boy. I’m ten years older than you and I deserve some respect. You’re a kid. You’re stink is bad. Do something about your breath.”

Groves: [Now talking louder and looking angry] “You’re not going to have to smell it when I’m standing over you.”

Froch: “Why are you getting loud now? What’s with the pink salmon trousers?”
