Fans are desperate to see Mayweather Jr. lose

floyd9023By Robert Elmore: The desperation to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. lose has gone into over drive. And from the looks of things, it’s not going to stop until he either loses or retires. It has gotten to the point where a fight with light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins has been talked about with the fight taking place at 160 pounds (middleweight). Whether it was a ploy or to get people talking, it worked. And somehow it equated to Floyd “is scared to fight Hopkins”.

Haters seem to forget that Floyd has not been heavier than 152 pounds since gracing the welterweight division. Even against Saul Alvarez his unofficial weight was 150 pounds. But what fascinates me even more are the free passes other fighters get. And there seems to be a “legitimate” reason for the free pass. Gennady Golovkin or Triple G is the Flavor of the month to beat Floyd.

Gennady never issued a challenge directly to Floyd, but did say it would be his dream fight. Triple G has also gone on record to say he will fight the best between 154 and 175.

But anytime the name Andre Ward or Carl Froch is brought up who are super middleweights, it is said “those fights needs time to simmer” “If the price is right, the fight can take place”. Triple G is one pound away from the super middleweight and it’s better than losing 6 pounds to drop to 154. But where is the beating of the drum? The screams? The petitions for these fights to happen right away? Where is the immediate push for him to pack on pounds to fight a light heavyweight as he said he’s open to do? Triple gets a free pass. Had he specifically called out Floyd, there would be no “time to simmer”.

It would take Triple G out the freezer un-thawed, throw him into the skillet, and hope that he beats Floyd. Whether it’s because he’s a wreaking havoc in the middleweight division, he doesn’t bring anything to the table financially, or the network struggle, he hasn’t had the marquee fight yet. To his credit, he did call out WBC champion Sergio Martinez which leads me here.

There has been some push and recently more of a push for Sergio to fight Golovkin. However, Sergio’s promoter doesn’t seem all that interested in making the fight happen. Here comes the free pass. Where was the gathering at the Washington Monument that Sergio needed to go up to 168 to get a big fight? There wasn’t one. Just a couple strolls around the block only to comeback with the excuse that those fighters “are bigger than him”.

I mean there wasn’t even an option to have one fight at the super middleweight to see how his body would fair with the weight. Now it seems that Sergio is targeting a big money fight with Miguel Cotto who fights at 154. But there are some that see nothing wrong with this as he has “earned” his right to such a pay day. But the ten time five division champion pound for pound Floyd Mayweather hasn’t earned his right to do so? Floyd has climbed five weight classes. Sergio has only climbed two (he began his career as a welterweight).

Then there is Manny Pacquiao. He’s an eight division world champion with tons of accomplishments. But as of late, even he has gotten a free pass. After his junior middleweight fight with Antonio Margarito for the WBC junior middleweight title, Pac returned to the welterweight division with no plans of campaigning or defending the belt. There are no plans flying around with a sign that says “He should challenge a middleweight”.

No threats to shut down Wild Card gym if he doesn’t once again fight at 154. Here comes the free pass. His adoring fans ask “What more do you want from him? He started his career at 106 pounds”. Floyd also began boxing at 106 pounds. The only difference is Pac turned professional at that weight while Floyd continued as an amateur. Now I’m going to be a little realistic here.

Top Rank promoter seems set on matching Pac against other Top Rank stable mates as evident by his last 7 fights (make it 8 with his fight against Brandon Rios). But even so, why no push for a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. when he stable at 160? He’s a Top Rank fighter right? Where is the Good Year blimp that says “Pac needs to fight Triple G or Sergio Martinez”? There isn’t one and there isn’t going to be one. Not even a rematch against Tim Bradley because “there’s no money there”. In fact, Pac signed an extension with Top Rank that will take him to the end of 2014. Why didn’t he leave and promote himself and go after Canelo?

In conclusion, Floyd will always be stuck in a no win situation with some fans. If he did take the Golovkin fight and it did poorly on pay per view sales, the boxing sites would need an overhaul as fans would pour in from every parts of the earth stating that Floyd isn’t the face of boxing. I can support that statement by the number of buys Floyd’s fight with Robert Guerrero got (875,000). And if Floyd wins, fans will say Triple G was weight drained even though he willingly said that he would drop to 154 for the right fight. No other fighter at least for right now, will have to succumb to the ridiculous demands fans put on Floyd and not others.
