By Paul Walsh: In past years when asked the question “what is boxing’s most exciting division?” It was always received with a simple answer- “the heavyweights” but now that very same question is not so straightforward.
Since the dominance of the Klitschko brothers the heavyweight division has become a dull and predictable scene where 50:50 fights are at a premium. Ask your self the question when was the last time a heavyweight fight headlined in Las Vegas or anywhere in the US? That tells you all you need to know.
So if it isn’t the heavyweights, what is the most exciting division in boxing today? Well that is open for debate, many will argue that any division Floyd Mayweather campaigns at has to be the most exciting. Others will point to the 12 stone super middleweights as that is the standard weight for the everyday man and one that the public are most likely to relate to. Then you have the featherweights who are all extremely technically gifted fighters with super hand speed and incredible power for their size. However, I am not going to propose any of these divisions, in fact the division I see as the most exciting in the world of boxing today is the middleweights.
Now before you all stop reading, there is a good explanation for this and his name is Gennady Glovkin otherwise known as “GGG”. For those of you who are unfamiliar with him, he is the Kazakhstan freight train who is steamrolling the middleweight division and knocking out everyone put in front of him. Remember the question was “what is boxings most exciting division?” not best. The middleweight division currently has the most 50:50 and potentially exciting fights of any division in the world right now.

That is just to name a few and with the talk surrounding Canelo and possibly Cotto also moving up to campaign at this weight it only creates even more super fights for fans and fighters a like. Promoters will be licking their lips at the prospect of making some of these match ups and I will be sure to tune in to each one.
In closing I am all for the 50:50 super fights and if that is what you want to see make sure you watch some middleweight action in 2014!
