HBO Boxing After Dark Weigh-In: Adonis Stevenson vs Tony BellewBy Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KO’s) has himself all worked up for tonight’s fight against WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (22-1, 19 KO’s), and with the way that he’s been talking, it almost feels like it’s a do or die type of a fight for the 31-year-old Bellew at the Colisee de Quebec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Bellew said to the Liverpool Echo “Come Saturday night, there’s only going to be one winner. He’s got to understand that I’m not coming here to lose. People have no idea what is at stake and how far I’m willing to go. He can’t beat me. I’m 6’3″ and he is so small. He looks like he’s fallen off my key ring. He is not getting to me. I was getting to him towards the end of the press conference.”

With Bellew, he seems to fight his best fights outside of the ring in talking and putting on theatrics of one kid or another. He’s good at creating pseudo drama, but when he gets in the ring he looks so awful and fails to impress. I had him losing to Isaac Chilemba in their first fight, and I thought Bellew should have been disqualified for mauling and not fighting in their second fight. Bellew looked terrible against Edison Miranda and definitely terrible against Nathan Cleverly. The only guys that Bellew looks good against are 2nd tier fighters like Danny McIntosh and Roberto Feliciano Bolonti.

Bellew is coming all the way from his home in Liverpool, and this is his big chance to make some cash after all those years of struggle. You can tell that Bellew really needs this win tonight, but it’s just too bad that he picked the most talented fighter in the division because Bellew really doesn’t have any chance of winning.

Wanting to win isn’t enough when you’re facing a much more talented fighter. Bellew says he’ll do anything, but pretty much the only way he could probably beat Stevenson is if he turned the fight into a wrestling match without rules and without a referee. Given that this fight is in Canada, I really don’t think Bellew will get away with the wrestling that he did in the 2nd fight against Chilemba. As such, I see Bellew getting knocked out in the 1st or 2nd rounds tonight. I see him getting emotional afterwards with the water works and all that, but it won’t change the reality of what will have happened in the fight. Stevenson is going to knock him out and there’s nothing he can do about it.
