By Allan Fox: Heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov (18-1, 18 KO’s) has reportedly had a medical setback the same day he was awakened from a medically induced coma on Friday. Abdusalamov was taken off of life support and allowed to breath on his own. However, his temperature rose quickly and he put back into a medically induced coma at the St. Luke’s Hospital, in New York, according to RingTV.
Abdusalamov’s promoter Nathan Lewkowich told RingTV “[Abdusalamov was] breathing on his own. Had opened his right eye. [had] moved his right foot.”
Unfortunately, the rise in temperature made it necessary for the medical staff to put Abdusalamov back into a coma.
Abdusalamov, 32, has been hospitalized since November 2nd following his bout with Mike Perez at Madison Square Garden in New York. He lost the fight by a 10 round unanimous decision. However, afterwards, Abdusalamov complained of a severe headache and was taken to the Roosevelt Hospital in New York, and it was there that it was discovered that he had a blood clot on the brain. He was then operated on and the clot was removed.

Alekseev and Hernandez weigh-in
IBF cruiserweight champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (27-1, 13 KO’s) successfully weighed in for his fight on Saturday night against German based Russian Alexander Alekseev (24-2-1, 20 KO’s) at the Stechert Arena, Bamberg, Bayern, Germany. Hernandez, 29, weighed in at 198.4 lbs., as did the 32-year-old Alekseev. This will be Hernandez’s 3rd title defense of his International Boxing Federation title.
Alekseev has looked good against fringe level and 2nd tier opposition throughout his 7-year pro career which began in 2006. However, he definitely struggles when he’s moved up a notch against world class opposition. Alekseev has been knocked out by both Denis Lebedev and Victor Emilio Ramirez. He also has a controversial 12 round draw against Firat Arslan in a fight that took place last year. Alekseev was dominated by Arslan for 12 rounds, but the judges still scored the fight as a draw.
Hernandez, 6’4″, would figure to have too much power and skill for Alekseev and I’d be very surprised if this fight goes the distance. Alekseev is vulnerable both early and late, as he tends to wear down late in his fights, but he also can be blitzed if he’s attacked with a powerful assault the way that Lebedev did.
Also on this card is #1 WBO heavyweight contender Denis Boytsov trying to lock himself in as the mandatory challenger for WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in a fight against Alex Leapai. Boytsov weighed in at 224.8 lbs, whereas Leapai came in at 244.7.
