Adonis Stevenson vs. Tony Bellew this Saturday

bellew68By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC challenger Tony Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KO’s) will be facing the music this Saturday night in his title challenge of WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (22-1, 19 KO’s) at the Colisee de Quebec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Given that the fight is taking place in Canada, I have a feeling that we won’t have to worry about in early controversial stoppages in this fight where a referee opts to step in and stop the fight while both guys are still alert and fighting.

Bellew is really taking a huge step up from the guys that he’s been facing his entire career. We’re talking about a fighter that was beaten by Nathan Cleverly and who arguably should have two defeats on his resume from his fights against Isaac Chilemba. It doesn’t look for Bellew that he couldn’t even beat those two guys.

Bellew has been bragging about how he’s going to take away Stevenson’s power and expose him as being little more than a small man. I think Bellew is going to be in for the shock of his life on Saturday night when he finds out how hard this small man can punch. I’m still not sure what Bellew’s secret game plan is to negate Stevenson’s speed and power, as if there is a plan. All I can think of is Bellew clinching Stevenson for 12 rounds and hoping that the referee lets him get away with it like he did in his last fight against Chilemba last May in Liverpool. I thought Bellew should have been disqualified by the 5th round for all the awful holding he was doing, but the referee just let him grab for 12 rounds without doing anything.

Yeah, I know the mishmash about how styles make fights, but when you’re not able to beat guys convincing at a lower level, then that tells you pretty much how you’re going to do when you’re put in with an advanced fighter with amazing speed, power and talent like Stevenson. I just see this as going really badly for Bellew.

If I was Bellew’s trainer, I’m going to have my white towel hung on my shoulder ready to toss it in the ring when Bellew starts getting it in the 1st round. I might even have two towels just in case the referee doesn’t see the first towel that gets thrown in the ring. It would be bad if Bellew takes some big shots like Carl Froch did last Saturday night and is out on his feet the way that Froch was, but without a referee stopping the action to give him a standing 8 count like we saw in that fight. When or/if Bellew gets smashed to the head with a big left hand, you don’t want him staggering about the ring completely helpless for Stevenson’s coup de grace left hand finisher.

Stevenson has been a one-man wrecking crew in his last 10 fights in destroying the likes of Chad Dawson, Tavoris Cloud, Noe Gonzalez Alcoba, Darnell Boone and many, many more good fighters. Stevenson doesn’t give them a chance to get anything going before he starts blasting them with big head shots that have them in big trouble.
