brook3By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten Kell Brook (30-0, 20 KO’s) made weight today at Friday’s weigh-in for his fight on Saturday night against Ukrainian Vyacheslav Senchenko (34-1, 23 KO’s) at the Motorpoint Arena. Brook weighed in at 146.1 lbs., and Senchenko came in a litle heavier at 146.8 lbs.

Brook looked like he was trying his hardest to give the taller and older Sencehnko the meanest looks he could to try and gain an edge, but Senchenko merely smiled back at him blankly, as if to say ‘Been there done that.’ Brook’s attempts at intimidation went nowhere at all, and he ended up looking rather silly with his game face on but without Senchenko squirming in response.

Heavyweight Anthony Joshua weighed in at 232 lbs. for his fight agaisnt Paul Butlin. Joshua looked like he was carrying around a little too much muscle on his upper body. He could stand to lose 10-15 pounds of the weight to make him more agile, quicker and likely more powerful. At the weigh-in, Joshua looked more like a body builder than a fighter. Butlin weighed in at 236 lbs., and he didn’t have a very confident look on his face. It was hard not to see him and think that he’ll be beaten rather easily. I hope not, but that’s the way I read it.

Brook absolutely needs a win over Senchenko for him to get a title shot against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander. Brook has been squawking about wanting the title shot against Alexander for ages and when he finally had the opportunity earlier this year, Brook’s body failed him twice with injuries. His moment in time had come and twice his body fell apart during training. I don’t know what to make from that other than he couldn’t make it to the starting line and missed his turn. The mind was willing but his body let him down.

Now Brook is going to try again to put himself in line for a fight against Alexander. If Senchenko beats Brook on Saturday then it’s going to take him ages to work himself back into position again. It won’t help if Brook chooses to face the guys that he’s been fighting lately because that kind of opposition won’t move you along quickly enough. Brook will need actually step it up and face the top guys, and that’ll be hard to do if he can’t even beat Senchenko.
