Only three men have gone the distance with Golovkin, will Stevens be another KO victim?

stevens3By @BoxingMuse: November the 2nd sees ‘GGG’ meet Brownsville, Brooklyn’s Curtis ‘Showtime’ Stevens. In 27 professional fights prior to this exciting match up only three men have heard the final bell when facing middleweight punching sensation Gennady Golovkin.

The first man to last the distance in 2007 was an Algerian by the name of Mehdi Bouadla who was also halted by two former world champions in Arthur Abraham and Mikkel Kessler.

Secondly was Ian Gardner in 2008 a Canadian boxer who was previously stopped by ‘Bad’ Chad Dawson & lost points decisions to Peter Manfredo Jr and Arthur Abraham.

Most recently but still around 5 years ago, Amar Amari another Algerian who is a fairly unknown pugilist with the record of 13-9-1 at the time, saw the fight the distance out with Gennady when he was 12-0 prospect.

The ‘Kazakh KO King’ is seeking his 15th knockout victory in a row, standing in the way of this impressive feat is hard hitting Stevens with an impressive resume of 25-3, although the American majorly underachieved in his losses. In 2006 Curtis lost to a Venezuelan called Marcos Primera whom he lost by TKO in the 8th round only to beat his conqueror by a decision in a rematch several months later. Stevens lost a UD to Andre Dirrell as ‘The Matrix’ was up and coming which is a result not to be ashamed of. The only real alarming slip up in Stevens career was against former TV show contestant Jesse Brinkley of ‘The Contender’ series. Brinkley sent Stevens to the canvas twice before winning a UD against the favorite, Stevens.

Golovkin V Stevens at Madison Square Garden Theater, New York is set to be an explosive event but Stevens goes into the ring as a massive underdog with boxing fans and the bookmakers. Golovkin stands at around a 8-1 favorite. Both men are big punchers and although you have to say Golovkin is the better technician, Stevens has good boxing ability too. I feel fight fans will see blood, guts and violent exchanges, whatever the outcome.

Potential big match-ups are on the horizon for the Kazakhstan who has made it very public he would be willing and able to fight at 154lbs. You could estimate his power would be a force even at light-heavyweight. Although ‘Showtime’ Stevens is no walkover and has an arsenal of weapons himself it is a long shot to back the underdog against the momentum of the new kid on the middleweight block, Gennady Golovkin.
