Mosley going home, no Mundine fight

By Chris Williams: The right scheduled between Shane Mosley and Anthony Mundine for this Wednesday is now off, according to a press release. There had been reports of poor ticket sales for the fight. Mosley was said to want a portion of his purse to be put into his escrow account ahead of time just in case.

Mosley is now heading home to the United States without the fight taking place. He doesn’t know when he’ll fight again, but it’s not likely he’ll be fighting again until 2014.

It’s perhaps for the best that Mosley won’t be fighting the much bigger Mundine because he would have likely had a lot of problems dealing with the 38-year-old Mundine’s big size advantage. Although Mundine fights at 154 now, he’s still more like a super middleweight than a junior middleweight, and it would have been a big problem for Mosley to deal with his size advantage over him.

In his last fight the 42-yard-old Mosley barely beat Pablo Cesar Cano by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision last May. It was Mosley’s first victory since January 2009. In response to the victory the WBA and WBC gave Mosley an elevated ranking of #5 by their sanctioning bodies, which seems strange given that Mosley has only one victory in the last four years and that was against a fighter that was beaten recently by Paulie Malignaggi and was destroyed by a way past his best Erik Morales back in 2011. The ranking is very high for what Mosley accomplished in barely beating Cano.

In the last three years, Mosley has been trounced by Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Mosley was given a controversial draw against Sergio Mora in September 2010. Few people feel that Mosley deserved a draw in that fight.

One of the reasons why Mosley is still a viable opponent is because he’s better known than virtually all the top contenders in the division, but that doesn’t mean that he’s on the same level as them. It’s doubtful that Mosley could compete against the likes of Keith Thurman and some of the other top contenders at this stage in his career.

What direction Mosley goes in from here is unclear. He can always find fights against contenders, but it’s doubtful that he can get a world title shot without beating a top name. Mosley was given title shots against Canelo and Pacquiao, and he was thrashed in both fights. Since those defeats, Mosley has only beaten Cano and no one else.
