Miguel Cotto vs. Danny Garcia at 140

By Adrian Alvarez Jr: After watching a throwback fight of Miguel Cotto’s vs. Carlos Maussa another undefeated prospect from Colombia at the time, I was reminded of what a strong Junior Welter and Welterweight Cotto was so it brought a question who wins between 140lb Cotto and now reigning and defending 14olb junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia?

Now I’m not saying they will never fight but the odds are slim given that Cotto now fights in the 154lb Junior Middleweight division, and we will probably never move back down to Welterweight and even less now with him possibly moving up to 160 or a catch weight of 157-158lbs to fight reigning and defending Middleweight champ Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, there’s always the possibility that Danny Garcia someday catches up to him in weight and they fight but with Garcia not even having moved to full Welterweight yet (which is why I didn’t name the article Miguel Cotto vs Danny Garcia at 140-147lbs) that would probably be a long time from now and Cotto by then would be a little older and on his last couple of or last fight.

Now for a break down of each fighter, I have Cotto being a better all around boxer in terms of his sledge hammer Jab and the fact that he uses it often, movement, speed and the better ability to slip punches, in the power area I have them basically even with both of them having lethal left hooks though Garcia’s was produced in Philly where it is said the best left hook comes from and the ability to KO an opponent at any given point of the fight, now for cardio and stamina I’d have to go with Garcia having a slight edge on Cotto after this last showing against Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse he didn’t really look too tired at any point of the fight and kept a good pace, where with Cotto we’ve seen him gas out at the end of some of his fights, and chin I’d have to say Garcia by far has the much better chin though Cotto’s is descent but Garcia took some monster shots from Matty in their fight and didn’t ever look stunned at any point of the fight not to mention his fight with Judah with blood streaming down his head and fighting with a broken nose in Garcia vs Morales I.

Which brings me to my last  comparison, heart, I give Cotto a slight edge in heart though I think I just demonstrated some examples above why Garcia has heart but Cotto has been in just plain and flat out battles, beginning with his battle against Judah with blood streaming down his lip from very early in the fight and never looking discouraged, also his battle with Shane Mosley, his first fight with Antonio Margarito where he was hit for 11 rds with what is speculated as plaster of paris and didn’t take his first knee until the 11th rnd, and his battle with Filipino legend and great Manny “Pacman” Paquiao not being TKO’d until the 12th rnd when many of Pacman’s previous opponents were KO’d well before then.  To conclude overall I think Cotto wins this fantasy battle at 140lbs with Garcia by either unanimous decision or very close split decision depending of course on who the judges would be and where it would take place because unfortunately in our great sport those things are relevant either way Cotto by decision but the great thing about writing these articles is to see what you my fellow fans would think or say so please feel free to share your thoughts.
