Marquez feels he was robbed in Bradley bout

marquez#4By Allan Fox: 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) wasn’t ready to admit defeat tonight after his 12 round split decision defeat to WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (31-0, 12 KO’s) in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Marquez may have lost the fight on the judges’ scorecards, he was unwilling to admit that Bradley was the better man tonight. Instead, his theme was that he should have won.

Marquez said after the fight “We came to win and we did. The judges saw something else.”

It’s too bad Marquez feels that the judges got it wrong because he’s probably not going to get a rematch with Bradley. There’s little doubt that Bradley will move on and look to fight either the winner of the Brandon Rios vs. Manny Pacquiao fight or Floyd Mayweather Jr., if possible. It’s not likely that Bradley will get a Mayweather fight unless he leaves Top Rank and is willing to fight on Showtime. Marquez is kind of in a bad situation now.

The interest in a Marquez-Pacquiao 5th fight won’t be the same as it was now that he’s lost, and Pacquiao might not want to fight him now. Bradley can fight the loser of the Pacquiao-Rios fight, but there doesn’t seem to be any point unless he’s hoping to get as many paydays as he can before he gets out of the sport. The options for Marquez are one of the following Top Rank fighters: Pacquiao, Rios or Mike Alvarado.

For Marquez, this is the 4th fight where he feels he was robbed by the referee. In his first 3 fights against Manny Pacquiao, Marquez thought that he should have been given the victory in all of those fights. This is why he chose to go all out in their fourth fight looking for a knockout, which he succeeded in getting last December.

Bradley did a good job of beating Marquez to the punch through most of the fight with his faster hands. Bradley was more willing to let his hands go early in the fight, while Marquez tended to look for the best possible moment before landing one of his punches.

Marquez waited too long in trying to counter Bradley, and that wasn’t a good plan because Bradley didn’t throw a lot of punches for him to counter. Marquez fights a lot better when he’s facing an opponent like Manny Pacquiao who throws a lot of punches. But against Bradley, Marquez had few opportunities to land his big shots.
