Is Danny Garcia’s fighting style too dull for Mayweather bout?

garcia65 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia is one of the names that have been mentioned as a possible opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s net fight in May of next year. However, after Garcia’s recent less than exciting performance against Lucas Matthysse last September it could be that Danny failed to fight at a high enough level to get the Mayweather payday.

In other words, Danny won the battle in clinching and moving his way to a dull victory over Matthysse but he may have lost the ultimate war in trying to land the fight with Mayweather.

For an important fight date like the Cinco de Mayo holiday on May 3rd, Mayweather needs an opponent that will come to him to make it a fight. He can’t be battling someone that will be holding and running for 12 rounds.

There will be too many boxing fans that will be shelling out big bucks on pay-per-view to see this fight card, and Golden Boy Promotions needs to make sure that they produce value for the main event involving Mayweather.

Golden Boy Promotions also needs a fighter with a name that is recognizable to more than just the hardcore boxing fans. I hate to say this but Danny is still an unknown with casual boxing fans in the U.S. It’s possible that he’ll become a name at some point in the future, but right now he’s still a little too obscure for Mayweather to be taking the risk of fighting him and ending up with low PPV numbers.

I’m sure that Golden Boy wouldn’t mind Mayweather fighting Danny because it would increase his value for their promotional company because they promote him. However, it wouldn’t do anything for Mayweather to be facing someone that the casual boxing fans aren’t familiar with, especially if the fight turns out boring with Danny clinching and running all night long like he did in the Matthysse bout.

Instead of Danny getting the Mayweather fight, I’d like to see Mayweather fight one of the following opponents: Amir Khan, Devon Alexander, Adrien Broner or maybe Matthysse. I realize Matthysse just lost, but he at least made it exciting for the entire 12 rounds by trying to fight hard instead of running and clinching.
