By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says that he’d match his fighter IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) if Golovkin would agree to the fight.
Hearn says he would make that Froch’s next fight if Groves would say yes to it, and Hearn thinks it has the potential of being a pay-per-view fight in the UK as well as the United States.
Hearn told I Film London “I think Froch would fight Golovkin next. I don’t think Golovkin is overly keen. That’s what I’ve heard from various sources…I think it’s a wonderful fight. That’s going to be PPV in the U.S and the UK.”
First off, I don’t think for a second that Golovkin is afraid to fight a slow, utterly hittable fighter like Froch. That would be an easy fight for Golovkin. Froch is coming off of his worst performance of his career in his rematch against Mikkel Kessler last May. Froch looked absolutely terrible in taking punishment from the 5th round on, and winning a close decision.
As far a Golovkin-Froch fight being a PPV fight, it might be in the UK, but you can’t sell a fight like that in the U.S, not now. Froch isn’t a huge name with the casual boxing fans in the U.S., and Golovkin is in the same boat. I mean, you can make the fight a PPV bout, but that doesn’t mean that it’s going to sell well in the U.S. I’d be surprised if Froch-Golovkin was to do even 50,000 buys, and that’s a dreadful number.
What Hearn isn’t realizing is that Froch has a fight on November 23rd against George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) in the UK, and Froch isn’t likely to win that fight.
Golovkin has a tough fight of his own on November 2nd against Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18 KO’s) in New York, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he lost that fight as well.
How is Hearn going to sell a PPV fight between two beaten fighters? No one is going to want to purchase a Froch-Golovkin fight in the U.S if and when both guys get beaten in their next fight. And if one of them loses, Hearn still won’t be able to sell the fight because one of them will be coming off of a loss.
Golovkin would take a fight against Froch, but it’s not a fight that U.S fans are interested in seeing. Fans in the U.S want to see Golovkin fight popular guys like Peter Quillin, Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. They don’t want to see Golovkin facing a fighter that was schooled in the Super Six finals in a loss to Andre Ward.
If Golovkin does seem disinterested in the Froch fight, he has good reason to. He’s got to know that it’s not a fight that would interest the American fans. That would be a fight that would likely draw poor ratings on HBO, and that would be a waste of time for Golovkin.
Golovkin would likely destroy Froch in 3-6 rounds. I think it would be a slaughter of a fight due to Golovkin’s superior power and boxing skills. Froch would be stunned like he was in his last fight against Mikkel Kessler, and then Golovkin would move in for the kill to finish Froch off.
