Robert Guerrero could face Broner-Maidana winner, says Schaefer

guerrero3342By Dan Ambrose: Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) is through for the remainder of the year after his one-sided 12 round unanimous decision decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May, according to Steve Kim. That means the 30-year-old Guerrero will have fought only once in 2013. He’ll be alright though because Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that Guerrero, #8 WBA, could face the winner of the December 14th fight between Adrien Broner and Marcos Maidana.

That’s not the idea opponent that boxing fans are hoping that the winner of the Broner-Maidana will be fighting, but if that’s all that Golden Boy has to offer then it’s going to have to suffice. Fans want to see the winner of the Broner vs. Maidana fight to take on Mayweather.

Steve Kim said on his twitter “Richard Schaefer says that Robert Guerrero will fight again in 2014, possibility is that Broner-Maidana winner.”

Guerrero is too young to be fighting once a year. He get one big payday fight against Mayweather and now he seems to have backed off like he’s a champion or something. With as one-sided a loss as he suffered against Mayweather, I don’t think Guerrero deserves to get an immediate title shot against the Broner vs. Maidana winner. Guerrero should have to work his way back to a title shot by taking on the likes of Kell Brook, Luis Carlos Abregu, Jessie Vargas and Victor Ortiz. If he can beat one or two of those guys, then he’d deserve a title shot against Broner or Maidana, but not until then.

Broner is ready to fight Mayweather if he beats Maidana. If Golden Boy is going to feed Amir Khan to Mayweather, then Broner should be next in line because Mayweather badly needs some interesting opponents for his remaining four fights of his Showtime/CBS contract. Broner is interesting because his fighting mimics that of Mayweather completely. The only reason why Broner isn’t a perfect copy of Mayweather is because he lacks foot and hand speed. It would still be kind of need to see Broner trying to beat Mayweather with the fighting style he got from him.
