golovknin00001By Sevak Sarkisian: As every boxing fan is well aware of, this Saturday Gennady Golovkin (27-0 24ko’s) makes his return to the ring against middleweight contender Curtis Stevens (25-3 18ko’s). The fight will take place in Madison Square Garden and will be televised live on HBO.

Since bursting on to the American boxing scene last September against Proksa, Golovkin has captured the attention and imagination of American boxing fans. Golovkin has a fan friendly style and possesses serious power in both hands. He has the highest knockout ratio out of all the current champions in the sport. However, there are still many unanswered questions regarding how good of an all around fighter he is because he hasn’t fought top tier opposition yet in his career.

The best fighters Golovkin has defeated is a washed up Kassim Ouma and a natural Jr. middleweight in Gabe Rosado. That is not impressive considering the fact that Golovkin is a middleweight titlist. However, in my opinion Golovkin will have a relatively easy time having his way with Stevens. Stevens is only 5’7 in height and has a significant size disadvantage against Golovkin.

Stevens possesses good power but has come up short against the best fighters he has faced. Jesse Brinkley was able to use his jab effectively in there fight and managed to win a fairly easy decision against Stevens back in 2010. Stevens has also been stopped by a fighter who currently has 28 losses on his record. That in it’s self is a big enough reason for me to believe that this upcoming fight is a big mismatch in favor of Golovkin.
Hopefully after this fight we can see Golovkin matched up with Sergio Martinez or Chavez Jr. so fans can find out how good he really is. However, it is clear that he has serious punching power in both hands and fights in a fan friendly style which is why I am excited for this fight!
