Floyd Sr. says Hopkins won’t get Mayweather fight

hopkins65By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Sr. on Wednesday put the clamps down on any talk of there being a fight between his son Floyd Mayweather Jr. and IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins by saying that it’s just foolish talk from Hopkins and that he won’t be getting a fight against Mayweather Jr. Hopkins has recently been bringing up Mayweather Jr’s name in interviews in hopes that he can drum up interest in the fight, but it looks like he’s wasting his time from what Mayweather’s father is saying.

Floyd Sr. told HustleBoss, “He’s talking awful foolish. It’s a good thing for what he’s done and what he’s doing still. But I’m going to tell you right now, he’s jealous about Floyd. Talking about fighting Floyd, as big as he is. He ain’t fighting Floyd. It’s stupid, man. To be honest with you, it don’t even make sense for that fight to even take place.”

Bernard might not be jealous of Mayweather Jr., but what he does seem to want is the payday that would come with a fight against Mayweather Jr. in addition to the attention he would get in fighting him and the potential positive effects to his legacy should he be able to defeat Mayweather. If Hopkins could beat Mayweather, it would be by far the biggest victory of Hopkins’ career. There’s nothing that could compare to that. Hopkins’ biggest wins have come against a totally shot Roy Jones Jr., Felix Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, Kelly Pavlik, Jean Pascal and a shot Oscar De La Hoya.

Hopkins had a size advantages over Trinidad and De La Hoya, so you can’t really count those as fair fights because those guys were all moving up in weight to face the middleweight Hopkins. Of course, it won’t matter in the history books that Mayweather was fighting a much bigger guy in Hopkins. If Hopkins can defeat Mayweather, then he’ll have a huge victory and he’ll be the one that will have his name in the record books for having defeated him.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s interested in matching Hopkins and Mayweather together. But Schaefer can’t force Mayweather to take that fight. He can suggest that he take it, but Mayweather will likely dismiss the notion of fighting Hopkins because of the size he’d be giving up to him. If Mayweather were to say yes to a fight against Hopkins then there would be a stampede of super middleweights, light heavyweights and even cruiserweights all trying to get Mayweather in the ring for the payday they’d get in facing him.
