Canelo to meet with Schaefer next week to discuss next fight

By Dan Ambrose: The recently beaten former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) will be at Golden Boy Promotions head quarters in Los Angeles, California next week to meet with CEO of GBP Richard Schaefer and matchmaker Eric Gomez to discuss plans for his next fight.

Canelo said “I’m scheduled to travel next week to Los Angeles to meet with Richard Schaefer and Eric Gomez for a meeting that we hold after each fight.”

Canelo was beaten last month by Floyd Mayweather Jr. by a 12 round decision in a big fight in Las Veras, Nevada. This was the red-haired Canelo’s dream fight in which he was going to prove to Mayweather and the world that this was “His time.” Unfortunately, Canelo was exposed as another limited, flat-footed fighter without the skills to compete with Mayweather. Canelo looked worse than past Mayweather victim Victor Ortiz.

There’s been talk of Canelo’s team wanting Miguel Cotto next, as he’s seen as the biggest name at 154 other than Mayweather. Cotto has fight this Saturday against Delvin Rodriguez, and there’s no telling if he’ll be able to get past him. Golden Boy may not be able to put together a fight between Cotto and Canelo though because Cotto is now a Top Rank fighter, and that alone might be enough for the fight to not take place.

If the Cotto-Canelo fight can’t get made then Golden Boy will have to match Canelo against another welterweight if they want to put him into a fight that the boxing public will care a bout. If Canelo fights someone like IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina, it’s doubtful that the fans will give two figs about that bout. Molina isn’t a big name, and it’s not a fight that will interest a lot of people.

Junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo could be an option as well for Canelo. Angulo is coming off of a stoppage loss to Erislandy Lara from last June. It’s not ideal for Canelo to be facing a guy that was just stopped, but it’s that Canelo’s Mexican fans might like because of Angulo’s brawling style of fighting. Angulo might be a little dangerous for Canelo because can punch and he does well against fighters that stand directly in front of him try to slug the way that Canelo likely would.

A much better fight would be Canelo vs. Erislandy Lara. However, Golden Boy might not like that idea because Lara is like a bigger version of Mayweather due to his slick boxing style and his pinpoint punching. That would take a lot of courage for Canelo and Golden Boy to face the likes of Lara, and I just don’t see it happening. He’s too dangerous and capable of dominating late in the fight when Canelo gasses out. This would be a real nightmare for Canelo if he were to take he fight, and I think he would lose to Lara.

If Golden Boy matches Canelo against a welterweight, then you’ve got to expect names like Keith Thurman, Andre Berto, Victor Ortiz or Robert Guerrero to be mentioned.
