deontay73872By Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner was very impressed with the performance of undefeated heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) in watching him pick up his 30th straight knockout last night in stopping Nicolai Firtha (21-11-1, 8 KO’s) in the 4th round at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Broner came away from watching Deontay’s performance in total awe with the way that Deontay was able to thrash a good fighter in Firtha and put him down three times in the fight before it was halted in the 4th.

Adrien Said “He’s [Deontay] got a great future. He’s doing great things. 30-0 with 30 knockouts, his record speaks for itself, and of course all the fans love knockouts.”

Broner is totally right. The fans do love knockouts and Deontay is on course to becoming the next Mike Tyson for U.S fans. With each knockout victory, Deontay is going to become more and more popular. Once he’s up there in 40-win range, he’s going to be a star. At 50-0 with 50 knockouts, Deontay will be so much more popular at that point compared to now that boxing fans won’t remember back when he wasn’t a star. That’s how popular this guy is going to be.

As reported earlier today, Deontay’s promoters at Golden Boy are looking to position Deontay in a title fight against the WBC mandatory challenger Bermane Stiverne for the vacant WBC heavyweight title once the current champion Vitali Klitshko vacates his title or has it stripped from him. Right now, Vitali has been given some leeway with th World Boxing Council due to his hand injury. But by the start of the next year if Vitali doesn’t make a move to schedule a fight with Stiverne, which I highly doubt he’ll do, the WBC will have little choice but to strip the title from Vitali.

They can’t have a champion who doesn’t defend the title for long stretches. It’s already been over a year since Vitali last defended his title, and if he doesn’t defend the belt next year, the WBC will have allowed one of their champions to sit on a title without defending it for 2 years. It’s hard to say why Vitali still wants the title. I mean, he’s not defending it and it just seems like a useless status symbol that doesn’t mean anything due to him not having defended it in ages. it would be nice if Vitali were to give Deontay a shot at his belt, but he’s not going to face him if he does decide to defend the title again. It’ll be the much shorter and less dangerous Stiverne that Vitali would be facing. Stiverne is his mandatory challenger, and he has to defend it against him if he wants to keep the belt. The WBC isn’t just going to give Vitali the belt for the life without him having to keep fighting.

In 2014, Deontay is going to be looking to accomplish some big things. It’s coming a year late based on the prediction that late legendary trainer Emanuel Steward had for for him. Steward saw Deontay winning a world title by 2013. Unfortunately, getting a title shot isn’t that easy for a top contender like Deontay when you have champions not defending their belts for long stretches and the sanctioning bodies letting them getting away with it.
