marquez#1By Dan Ambrose: WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (31-0, 12 KO’s) retained his title and kept his unbeaten record intact with a 12 round split decision victory over Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) at the Thomas & Mack Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The final judges scores were 115-113 for Marquez, 116-112 and 115-113 for Bradley.

Who you felt won depended on what you were looking for in the fight. If you appreciated action, then you thought that Marquez won. If you liked the movement from Bradley without many power punches landed, then you thought he won. It could have gone either way because Bradley stalled out the fight in most of the rounds, and he cruised in the last 5 rounds without working hard. That made it hard to give Bradley any of the last 5 rounds of the fight.

Orlando Salido (40-12-2, 28 KO’s) looked very impressive in defeating Orlando Cruz (20-3-1, 10 KO’s) by a 7th round TKO. Salido jumped all over Cruz in the 7th round in throwing power punch after power punch until finally Cruz collapsed onto the canvas after getting hit with a left and a right to the head. There was no getting up from the knockdown for him and the fight was quickly stopped at 1:05 of the round. It was supposed to be a competitive bout by some fans, but Salido showed that he still has a lot left in the tank with his performance.

Top Rank’s highly hyped Vasyl Lomachenko (1-0, 1 KO’s) defeated the much busier Jose Ramirez (23-5, 15 KO’s) in beating him by a 4th round knockout. Lomachenko knocked Ramirez down twice with body punches. The first was in the 1st round when Ramirez ran into a hard left to the midsection, causing Ramirez to fall to the canvas in a delayed reaction. In the 4th, Ramirez ran into another hard left hand to the body that put him down. This time he didn’t get up and the fight was halted at 2:59 of the round.

Lomachenko could face Orlando Salido next for his WBO featherweight title.
