Devon Alexander’s trainer says if Khan doesn’t sign by October 7th, then no fight on December 7th

alexander55By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) and Golden Boy Promotions has until next Monday, October 7th to negotiate a fight with IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (25-1, 14 KO’s), because if they haven’t done it by that time then there won’t be a fight between them on December 7th, says Alexander’s trainer Kevin Cunningham.

He’s looking out for Alexander’s welfare and he doesn’t want to have him put in a situation where he doesn’t have enough time to adequately train for the Khan fight. Cunningham wants Alexander to have 8 weeks to get in shape and plan for Khan, and anything less than that isn’t enough time.

Cunningham told ESPN “If we don’t have 8 weeks to prepare, we’re not taking the fight December 7…At this moment we still have no deal.”

It’s hard to blame Cunningham and Alexander. Can you imagine Alexander being told with little time that he has to fight Khan with almost no time to prepare. Poor Alexander. I don’t think Khan and Golden Boy want this fight.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the main target for Khan, because do you honestly think that if Khan really wanted the Alexander fight that it still wouldn’t be signed with just 8 weeks to go. That doesn’t make sense at all and it tells me that they’re hoping for the Mayweather bout.

Alexander seems to be little seems to be little more than a pawn here in a way to get Khan a better deal. If Mayweather thinks that Khan has another option, such as the Alexander fight, he might give him a better deal. It looks bad for Alexander because he’s just sitting there waiting and not knowing what’s going to happen.

In the meantime, Khan is working out feverishly in Oakland, California with trainer Virgil Hunter. If Khan can’t get the Mayweather Jr. fight, then he’ll be ready for the Alexander fight because he’ll have been training all this time.

With Alexander, he doesn’t know even know whether he’s going to be fighting in December or not, so he hasn’t even started training. But if he doesn’t find out by next Monday, then Khan can forget it. He’ll have to fight Mayweather or some other opponent.

Heck, Khan will be much better off anyway not fighting Alexander because it’s not as if he’s going to beat him. Alexander will ruin Khan’s party by knocking him out and finishing any chances that he’ll ever get the Mayweather bout.

Alexander should know what time it is with Khan. I mean, the fight isn’t signed, rumors about Khan fighting Mayweather, and Floyd Sr. saying that he thinks his son will be fighting Khan next. If that’s not enough for Alexander to say forget it then I don’t what is. Alexander and Cunningham need to straight up tell Golden Boy that they’re no longer interested in the Khan fight.

Instead of Khan, Alexander needs to defend his IBF title against the next available contender, be it Kell Brook or whoever. No, scratch the idea of Alexander fighting Brook. Alexander doesn’t need to be waiting a lifetime for Brook to get healthy enough to fight.
